Acquaintance rape is not usually a topic that many people discuss. Besides the fact that it is a very heavy subject, many people don’t actually know what it is. Acquaintance rape is a form of rape that happens between two people who know each other from previous accounts. One of the many questions about acquaintance rape: is what makes a person do that to another person? Although no one knows the real causes of this act, study suggest that the new mindsets of men and women, the education about what acquaintance rape is, and also alcohol are all huge factors into acquaintance rape. Although ending acquaintance rape will take a while, a short term solution could be starting to educate girls and boys about acquaintance rape and teaching children how to prevent it. Acquaintance rape is one of the biggest crimes in America today; however society never talks about it. This is the same for rape situations. In many situations, the girl could be saying no or stop, the boy takes it as a girl trying to up hold her image. Rana Sampson supports this statement in her article. She said, “For example, many men are socialized to believe that women initially resist sexual advances to preserve their reputation and, because of this, prefer to be overcome sexually. If a woman says no, a man is to proceed as if she said yes. In addition, some men believe that if a woman is a "tease" or "loose," she is asking for sex. If she then claims rape, she changed her mind after the fact. Such men generally believe that most rapes are false reports.” (Sampson). This is one of the main causes of acquaintance rape. One would think that with all these women being sexually assaulted, one would hear more about it, or perhaps the police stations would constantly be busy. This is not the case. Sexual assault is one of the most unreported crimes, with 68% still being left unreported (RAINN, 2016). This could be because of every 100 rapists, only 2 will spend a day in jail. Of the 32 out of 100 that would be reported, only 7 are referred to an arrest (RAINN, 2016). Why would men or women want to report sexual assault when the system that is supposed to protect them fails so often, and why does this system continue to fail?
