Did you know that in a study of ATV accidents in 2011, eighty percent of the people that got injured hurt their torso area and above. That is estimated to be 85,000 people and almost thirty percent of those involved kids under the age of 16(CPSC Blogger). People who ride an All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) could avoid accidents leading to injury and even death by wearing helmets, taking a safety course and practicing safe riding habits.
When going over the studies it states that the most common types of ATV accidents are having to do with your waist and up (CPSC Blogger). During the years 2010 through 2011, thirty six percent of the accidents were head injuries. Also during this time, eighteen percent had injuries to their spinal cord and twenty-eight …show more content…

These should be a common practice for individuals that are active ATV riders. The Department Of Natural Resources (DNR) offers a class that you just have to go to their website (www.dnr.com) for more information. This course requires a minimum of six hours of instruction time but may be longer depending on the instructor. If you take the classroom course there is a $10 charge or a $15-$30 charge for the Internet course (DNR). In recent studies from 2001 to 2010 it was stated that “around 694 people die per year”(CPSC Bloggers). Based on the studies cited above, if you could save just one life it would be worth it by adopting the safety measures stated in this paper. On average, during the time of this ten year study, about 116 kids would have died during this time period (CPSC Bloggers). It should be noted that studies were conducted from 1982 through 2007 and the top ten places where people die on an ATV are California, Texas, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and Michigan (CPSC Bloggers). The number of deaths per state were “California had 504, Texas had 478, Florida had 407, Kentucky had 419, North Carolina had 331, Tennessee had 358, West Virginia had 444 , Pennsylvania had 459, New York had 338 and Michigan had 315”(CPSC Bloggers).
