Academic Integrity and the Honor Code In today’s academic world, technology integrates with education more and more each day. This leads to phenomenal educational possibilities, but also increases the inevitable likelihood of academic dishonesty. Time and time again, scholars have been caught cheating, plagiarizing, and acting without integrity in order to secure their places in the educational hierarchy. Because of this, institutions all across the world have enacted and enforce their own honor codes that dictate the fine dichotomy between right and wrong. If these predefined guidelines are broken, severe punishment may result. These honor codes exist to create a fairer environment for all students. While it is ultimately in the hands of …show more content…
It’s the fault of mankind and society itself that there will always be cheaters in every medium, especially academia. Honor codes exist to prevent dishonesty and uphold integrity across a student body. By merely being integrated in a school’s academic policy, honor codes accomplish three primary requisites for honest student success and hard work. The codes explicitly define what actions are considered dishonorable and detail what constitutes an offense. This causes the students to comprehend the severity of cheating and deters them from taking dishonest actions in the first place. By doing this, it is more obvious to the student body as a whole what actions are not permitted by faculty and what consequences they will be met with. The second important benefit of the honor code is how it eliminates poor study habits developed in high school and strengthens efficient study skills. Honor codes help students learn more effectively simply by existing. The offenders are punished, while the honest, hardworking students are rewarded and held in high regard. This is reinforced by the final benefit to an honor code. Honor codes establish a culture based on integrity. There is great honor is being honest in one’s schoolwork, and an entire student body encourages itself to work harder and avoid cheating. An environment is created in which students monitor each other to avoid cheating in the community. Dishonest activities and plagiarism are met with not only academic consequences, but social ones as well. No one wants to be labeled as the cheater. Honor codes are effective at creating a fair scholastic environment in which all students can flourish. Schools without honor codes are at a disadvantage, and should consider adopting a policy of their own. The Honor Code may be based off of ancient principles, but it has extensive benefits for students, professors, and administrators in a
...e, however in support of changing the honor code system in terms of the expulsion penalty at all times as well as the tolerance portion of the penalty. I feel that there are many circumstances in which expulsion is extreme and unnecessary especially when it has to do with tolerance of an honor code violation.
Honor Code has evolved over the years and its becoming more strict in its ways and flaws. “Taggert accused the administration of using the code to punish rather than to help students improve themselves” (Bergera). It lists of forbidden acts are antiquated and invade the students’ sense of privacy without truly defining the quality of honor. Other seemingly arbitrary codes such as no herbal tea, no short skirts and no beards are strictly enforced. Even Jesus Christ could not have attended BYU without shaving first. As a m...
In “Why Colleges Should Ditch Honor Codes” Susan Greenberg is trying to inform the audience as to why society does not require the honor code anymore. The rules that lie behind this regulation are becoming outdated and more students are finding themselves punished for disobeying it. A lot of honor code schools are trying to get rid of this process because it only brings the students more pressure. Typically, students that are in honor code schools tend to cheat more than schools that do not possess it. If a student is enrolled in a more prestigious school, he/she is more tempted to cheat in order to maintain his or her good grades. Greenberg explains a situation that took place in Stanford University that led more than 100 students in academic
Across the nation, schools, colleges and universities have established honor codes in their campuses to discourage cheating and promote academic integrity. Whether or not their honor codes are effective is a topic well debated and both sides have merit. At my school, Brookwood High School, the honor code should be revised, for only in an environment where the students are involved, consequences for cheating are high, and a culture of honor and integrity are established, can such as system thrive and succeed.
Honor codes or systems have been established at many schools across the nation, including Paloma Valley High School. These rules dictate what the school defines as ethical and yet not every student in attendance upholds these rules. Paloma Valley High School’s honor codes regarding education require maintenance as students avoid enforcement of the guidelines, meaning unethical behaviors prevail in a rather honest environment.
Studies have shown that, “…many schools with academic honor codes allow students to take their exams without proctors present, relying on peer monitoring to control cheating…a more important factor seems to be the peer culture that develops on honor code campuses—a culture that makes most forms of serious cheating socially unacceptable among the majority of students” (Source F). By using peers to uphold the honor codes, students are embarrassed if they are caught cheating. Therefore, they are less likely to defy the honor code at their school. However, if they break the honor code they should be punished by the same students and teachers who revised the honor code. Honor codes will be revised and enforced differently. For example one school’s, “honor code is strictly enforced, and the enforcement is handled by an all-student court. Students convicted of lying or cheating can expect to receive punishments ranging from suspension to expulsion” (Source C). If the honor code is in place, it needs to be enforced by the same people who follow it. This creates trust between the students and teachers which is how an effective honor code should
Having a honor code or system in schools promote integrity. This code is the school's position on practices such as cheating, stealing and plagiarizing, along with the consequences of violating the code. Source C explains that the punishment of violating the code ranges from suspension to expulsion. Going even further, a consequence that has been carried through has been taking away a student’s diploma after he/she has graduated (Source D) . By having this penalty, it forces students to move away from the temptation to cheat or plagiarize. Students are now aware of the consequences of their action when they violate the code. Schools, such as the University of Virginia, have students memorize a saying that confirms that their work is nothing but theirs; students also have to write this saying on all their tests during their college career (Source D). Having students continually see and write this statement is a constant reminder
“The real question was what type of environment we wanted to live in (Source B).” By eliminating the honor codes this action will show the students that they will have zero confrontation and not be held responsible for the mistakes of their fellow peers. “The students opposed this obligation to take action against another student because they did not see it as their responsibility (Source B).” The problem about honor codes is that it can create confrontation between peers, which in result will create an uncomfortable and unfair environment. Therefore schools should disregard any form of honor codes because it is not full
Honor codes differ amongst schools; however, each one provides a sense of how the school is run. The retributions listed in the honor code shows the freedoms the staff provides the students. Document C states that the success of honor codes “depends on ‘culture of academic integrity’ that leads students to take enforcement of the rules seriously.” In other words, the fairness and expectations of the school match with the students’ capabilities and interests, then the code will work. With some experience, I am able to see that it is important for both students and faculty to reach a consensus and find suitable terms; as a result, each goal is achieved and future confrontation can be
This statement perfectly introduces the concept that honor codes have an enormous effect on one’s character. Students who choose to follow the honor code are students who will generally be more honorable, honest, and trustworthy in their lives afterwards. While undergoing an honor code throughout their academic career, they will be able to take serious matters in life seriously, as they should be rightfully doing. Students who learn what it means to be honorable early on will understand that going about things “the easy way” is not how work should be done, whether it be for school or their career.
After some research on other university honor codes, the processes of honor codes are really similar to the University of Colorado at Boulder. In fact, Colorado State University (CSU) have a similar honor code pledge as us, which is “I have not given, receive, or used any unauthorized assistance. ” Comparing the discipline process between here and CSU and Stanford University, they are looks identical but written differently. However, the discipline from Stanford are harsher than here an CSU. From the Office of Community Standard Student Affairs website, “the standard sanction for a first offense includes a one-quarter suspended suspension. ” While CSU, they have a bit more lenient sanction for a first offense. From the CSU website, there are
An honor code can make a difference on how people behave. If those that were once students didn’t
In conclusion, the issue of academic integrity does not only affect an individual, but also an institution. Therefore, it is the duty of students and schools to ensure that ethical principles are upheld all the time. Moreover, institutions of higher learning should deal with all reported cases of academic dishonestly severely to deter others. In addition, a culture of academic integrity should be promoted. For students, it is even more important because it helps them to avoid losing a potential career due to misconduct. Moreover, upholding the values of ethics and integrity provides them with intrinsic
Academic integrity has been a major concern among many colleges and universities across the world. Many people may ask the question: what is academic integrity? University of Missouri’s Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (n.d.) states, “Academic integrity is the core set of values and principles that underwrites the very mission of the University itself; integrity, honesty, hard work, and the determination to translate personal and professional principles into behavior.” Some also may view academic integrity as the act of sustaining honest and rightful behavior in an academic setting that avoids, prevent and provide disciplinary actions for those who commits academic dishonesty, plagiarism and cheating of any kind. Majority of college and universities in all disciplines has academic ethics and honesty policies for all students regardless of their academic statues as undergraduate or graduate students. For example, Webster University’s Statement of Ethics (n.d.) for both graduate and undergraduate programs says, “Those who elect to partici...
A code of conduct is a set of rules and responsibilities that are written for individuals to follow. The code of conduct is a guide for people to follow in order to sustain a stable atmosphere in the work area and at school. This set of rules helps people stay in control because it provides them with a safer environment around each other and easier for everybody to get along. It also helps keep in control the character of all the people so they can only be permitted to do certain things. Not only that, but it helps the customers and businesses be protected. With the code of conduct implemented the students, can also show different people how an organization can mediate all its employees and students in a safe environment at school. School would benefit from having a code in place, especially when it comes to keeping employees and students safe from behavioral
