Abigail Williams, a girl most people believed to be against the devil’s work, but was really the one doing it. Most people saw her as a kind, wonderful young woman, but on the inside she was pure evil. The only people who knew her for who she really was were the people that was doing the devil's work also. As the play continued, the characters learned who Abigail really was, an evil, controlling, manipulative, selfish girl. One thing to know about Abigail Williams is that she is very manipulative. Almost everyone in town thinks she’s such a wonder girl because she’s the niece of Reverend Parris. “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of your mind. We never touched Abby” (Miller 1140). This quote reveals that Proctor committed an act of Lechery, cheated on his wife, and doesn’t want anything to do with Abigail anymore. It also shows that Abigail still loves and wants him. In act 2, Proctor and Elizabeth, his wife, talk about what happened. Elizabeth doesn’t fully trust him yet, but who could blame her. She is the one who fired Abby from her job, which is another reason why Abigail want’s to get rid of her. Abigail uses Mary Warren to get to Elizabeth. “I made a gift for you today, Goody Proctor. I had to sit long hours in a chair, and passed the time with sewing” (Miller 1165). The gift that Mary gave to Elizabeth was a poppet, which Abigail got her hands on. Abigail stuck a needle into the inside of the poppet, because she knew who Mary was going to give it to. Abigail used the poppet to frame Elizabeth, and to make sure everyone thought it was witchcraft, she stabbed herself with a sewing needle right where the needle in the poppet was. When Reverend Hale and some other people that are suppose to check the accused came to the Proctor house, they saw the Poppet and took Elizabeth away. Her and several other girls accused so many other people for fun or revenge. They would help the court decide if the people accused were guilty or not. Because of Abigail, the witchcraft situation got way out of hand, and many of the townsmen wives were getting accused, arrested, and hung. “It is not a child. Now here me, sir. In the sight of the congregation she were twice this year put out of this meetin’ house for laughter during prayer” (Miller 1201). John is trying to prove to the court that Abigail is the evil one here, and that she has been lying the whole time. He will say anything, without lying, even if it goes against his name to prove that Abby is an evil, lying girl. When the court begins to believe Proctor, she acts like Mary’s spirit is coming to get her. “I-I know not. A wind, a cold wind, has come” (Miller 1205) This is when she starts framing Mary, and trying to get the court back on her side. Finally Mary breaks, comes back to Abigail, and accuses Proctor of witchcraft, and forcing her to do and say things. At the end of the play, Abigail gets her revenge, but not in the way she wanted. She wanted Elizabeth gone, so that she could have Proctor to herself. What happened is that she did get rid of Elizabeth, but she was the reason why Proctor got hung. Abigail knew that people were after her now because of her lies, so she got on a ship and ran. Abigail’s evilness got her in such a mess,
