How does abandoning a child affect them? Most people don’t realize how much of those who have been abandoned as a child are actually affected even if they don’t show it. Child abandonment affects them in many ways that lead into their adult life, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) of abandonment that can occur. There are also consequences to child abandonment for the parents who abandon their child and there are traumatic consequences to the child from the parents abandoning them. Some people will ignore these symptoms because they are self-centered. These are ways to tell if someone has gone through abandonment by how they are emotionally. There’s also the behavioral symptoms to Child abandonment which are emotional flashbacks of the time of abandonment, addiction to self-medicate, vulnerability in social situations, and hyper-vigilance related to perceived threat related to original trauma (“Treatment for Abandonment…”). This is why most children that have been abandoned are so distant from others or act out with bad behavior. This means that those states take child abuse and abandonment seriously to combine them together and charge a parent with both. Most states classify child abandonment as a felony, which may include situations where a parent or guardian physically abandons a child in any place with the intent of relinquishing all rights and responsibilities to the child, while other states classify child abandonment as a misdemeanor (with lesser penalties), including situations that involve non-physical acts of abandonment(“Child Abandonment -Findlaw”).
