Identify three areas in which counselor competence is addressed in the ACA and the AMHCA Code of Ethics. The ACA code of ethics address areas of a counselor competence in Section C2 of the code. Section 2.a boundaries of competence addresses “counselors practice only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credential, and appropriate professional experience” (ACA Code of Ethics, pg. 8). Section C2.c qualified for employment addresses “counselors hire professional counseling positions only individuals who are qualified and competent for those positions” (ACA Code of Ethics, pg. 8). Section I focuses on the commitment to clients. Addressing the counselor-client relationship, counseling process, counselor responsibility and integrity, assessment and diagnosis, and other roles. Section III focuses on commitment to students, intern and employees, and commitment for clinical supervision. Section IV focuses on commitment to the profession addressing teaching, research and publications, and service on public or private boards and other organizations. What areas from the Code of Ethics do you feel need your attention in building your competence, given your current status as a graduate student? As a student, I feel the area in which I need to attend to in building my competence is counselor- client relationship not so much from my perspective but from my client’s perspective. I believe it’s due to my demeanor, engagement, and interactions with the client which makes them view me more as a friends or family member than counselor. I continue to work on new strategies and changing the way I interact with my clients. While continuing through this graduate program I hope to develop different strategies and approaches to help me adjust and improve my counseling skills.
