Mankind fell to its knees in times of calamity; injustice pricked at hearts and every crevice of the soul was sealed with despair. Nonetheless, valorous individuals ascended to fight oppression with humility, fueled by an unbreakable will, the will of a hero. Christopher Reeve imparts a profound realization through words enriched with struggle, “A hero is any ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles,” only the weak remain paralyzed by fear, the lingering shadow is there to enlighten us. Indifferent to struggle and sacrifice was Hussein Ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad in the Battle of Karbala, a martyr for Islam. Heroes are made, not born; they fulfill a purpose not merely for recognition but for the emulation of decency for generations to come, Martin Luther King Jr. embodied this ideal. A hero stands firm with conviction, facing the blaze that all else run from, with a coolness of a will and a cause.
Fear is capable of crippling every facet of a human being that acquiesces to its disillusions. Christopher Reeve suffered a tragic injury that ruptured his spinal cord leaving him paralyzed from neck down. Every morning he would shed tears in sadness looking at his condition, “I need twenty minutes to cry. To wake up and make that shift, you know, and to just say, this really sucks...to really allow yourself the feeling of loss...still needs to be acknowledged,” he felt it would be better for everyone if he were to just die. The realization of how quickly life could change impacted him immensely. Heroes have served as pillars for human beings to emulate and learn from. The underlying motive behind the courageous actions of these three men exists in their profound sense of justice and equality. A peaceful approach to all opposition will never fall to the likes of evil. To fulfill a greater purpose beyond the self and inspire generations to come is the greatest gift of all. The hero’s battle is fought to keep hold of truth and righteousness which can only be achieved by the highest example of human character—spiritual endeavor, persistence of purpose, patience and courage where ordinary human beings would lose hope, and sacrifice of worldly motives to the supreme truth regardless of consequence.
