A thousand years ago peasants and kings alike were drawn to the epic and often-heroic tales told by bards. Much like the modern audiences of movies today, these often-fantasized tales captivated their listeners and gave a microscopic glimpse into the culture of the medieval period. Today, there is no doubt that 21st century America is a vast and very divergent world than that of the writers of early British literature. However, nearly a thousand years after the original stories were written, American culture is still greatly influenced by these early Anglo-Saxon stories of heroism. Contemporary adaptations of these films combine these stories with the thrill of the dramatic cinema and the modern ideal’s of western culture to tame the overt epics of heroism to appear more “realistic” to a modern viewer. Grendel’s attack on Herot in the 2005 film adaptation of the Beowulf epic, Beowulf and Grendel, appears a little more pragmatic than the native text. Sturla Gunnersson, the film’s director, changes key qualities in both Grendel and Beowulf’s medieval characters in order to portray them as more human versions of their ancient counterparts. The contemporary Grendel appears more like a warrior and less like a monster, while the contemporary Beowulf appears less heroic.
The original text depicts Grendel as nothing more than a monster, a descendent of Cain. Grendel is a product of punishment. He has few human qualities and appears more animalistic in character. He fights like an animal, mauling his victims and eating their remains. He does not maintain an “honor code” of any kind and attacks his victims while they sleep. ...fight is not epic, the viewer does not see any unimaginable skill when it comes to either opponent. They are simply equal, both ultimately flawed. The contemporary version of the early text is much more realistic. It takes away the fantasized aspects of the text and creates a more rational version for the 21st century viewer. Modern-day audiences no longer respond to tales of “perfection and fantasy.” In order to maintain the attention of today’s viewers the film had to tell the ancient narrative while still remaining grounded in reality. The film version of Beowulf depicts the story as a more practical historic tale than as a sensational fantasy epic.

In Beowulf, the monster Grendel serves as the evil character acting against the poem’s hero, as shown by his unnatural strength, beast-like qualities, and alienation from society.
Grendel as a character is very intelligent, he is capable of rational thought at all times. Because of this, at sometimes during the story I would forget Grendel is a monster, the way he acts in his thoughts and actions I would mistake him for a human; at times I was even feeling bad for Grendel because he is a very lonely person who tries to understand all of the meaningless of the world around him. Society has evolved culturally since the 6th century. The simplistic and barbaric lifestyle of the Middle Ages, as portrayed in the epic poem Beowulf (Heaney, 2000), contrasts with the complex and civilized lifestyle of a modern day society, as depicted in the movie Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson, 2005). The flat characters of the epic poem exhibit little to no knowledge of the concepts of humility as well as compassion, whereas the characters of the film utilize these concepts to give each of the main characters a sense of depth as well as realistic personas that allow the audience to connect with them on a much deeper level.
The only credit given to Grendel’s origin is when the narrator states that he is a spawn of Cain himself. In the movie, however, Grendel’s father is seen in the very beginning of the film with baby Grendel. Grendel’s father is killed by the Danes while Grendel watches. Hrothgar raises his sword at baby Grendel, but drops it, and decides not to kill him out of mercy. Hrothgar would later regret not killing Grendel, but the important part is: Why is Grendel introduced with a father and why is he killed five minutes into the movie? Later on in the film it is revealed that the reason for Grendel’s father’s death was because he stole a fish from the Danes. The most logical explanation on why Grendel needed a father in the movie is to probably give Grendel a reason to terrorize and pillage the Danes. On the other hand, in Beowulf:The Epic, Grendel doesn’t really have a reason to be evil; he just is. As stated earlier, Grendel is a spawn of The First Murderer himself. A descendant of Cain is good enough reason for Grendel to be the evil monster he is. He attacks the legendary mead hall because the sounds of their festivities, music, and drinking, annoys him. “Then a powerful demon, a prowler through the dark (Grendel)...It harrowed him to hear the din of the loud banquet every day in the hall, the harp being struck and the clear song of a skilled poet telling with mastery of man's beginnings, how the
“Staring at his grotesquely muscled shoulders--stooped, naked despite the cold, sleek as the belly of a shark and as rippled with power as the shoulders of a horse--I found my mind wandering...He was dangerous” (155). Even from the first day Beowulf showed up at Hrothgar’s kingdom, Grendel knew he was dealing with something worse than a hero. Once they finally start to battle, the monster in Beowulf is fully revealed to Grendel and Grendel sees again the stupidity and meaninglessness in the human’s definition of a hero.“Grendel, Grendel! You make the world by whispers, second by second. Are you blind to that? Whether you make it a grave or a garden of roses is not the point. Feel the wall: is it not hard?...Hard, yes! Beowulf forces Grendel to make a fool of himself and unlike Unferth who longs for a heroic death, Beowulf knows he is going to win and has no desire to die. His mindset of victory, groups him with monsters who have one goal, to kill and never be killed. The epic poem, Beowulf, coming from the years of 600 to 700 AD has been translated in many different styles. In these excerpts by Burton Raffel and Lucien Dean Pearson, provides a clear understanding of this epic poem. Reading the two different translations, Raffel tends to provide the reader with a better understanding of the evil nature of Grendel and the heroic characteristics of Beowulf.
At this point in the epic, Beowulf is still the same as he was in the beginning. He's very proud after killing both a demon and his mother. He had no changing point. This is one of the biggest differences seen in the movies. And may be the reason why the movie is more appealing to the modern audience.
Grendel is the embodiment of all that is evil and dark. He is a descendant of Cain and like Cain is an outcast of society. He is doomed to roam in the shadows. He is always outside looking inside. He is an outside threat to the order of society and all that is good. His whole existence is grounded solely in the moral perversion to hate good simply because it is good.
To begin, we can examine the physical appearances of the two heroes. From the get go, we see Beowulf as a very powerful man. We see emphasise of this through the drawings of the novel. We see how muscular he is and the overall aura. He is relaxed and in control every step of the way.
The monsters of Beowulf live within us. Grendel, his beastly mother, and the hoarding dragon have frightened each and every human from the Stone Age to the era of the internet. All of our technology and globalization cannot banish them. Audiences worldwide are both repulsed and attracted to tales of their evil. They are Anglo-Saxon manifestations of primal human fears, those of the marauding predator. But the genius of Beowulf is that the monsters represent more than archetypical spooks and scares; they are foils to the civilized human being.
On the surface, the poem Beowulf seems to be a simple tale of a brave hero who triumphs over three monsters and who engages in several other battles in order to preserve what is just and right. A more thorough reading, however, reveals that the epic poem is filled with events that symbolize historical and social conditions that prevailed during the European reign of the Scandinavians in the seventh century to around the ninth century, following the Danish invasion of England (Sisson 1996).
