Another cultural and historical aspect brought up in “A Modest Proposal” is the attitude the public held for landowners. Swift writes, “I grant this food [children cooked] will be somewhat dear, and therefore very proper for Landlords, who, as they have already devoured most of their Parents, seem to have the best Title to the Children (12).” Here, Swift is implicating that Landlords consumed the funds and livelihoods that parents had to support their family. This line condemns landlords for the oppressive actions they practice, like charging high rent fees to impoverished families, without any regard to the family. First, it allows the reader to understand the history that the text was written in. History, in this way, can be defined as the institutions and cultural aspects outlined in both the pamphlets and main text. For instance, we now understand that the institutions of family order and Christianity are deeply embedded in Irish culture, and contributes to the way people think and analyze the text before them. Secondly, an advantage of the new historicist approach is that it not only examines the social context of the work, but it also examines the economic context of a work. For instance, if we simply examined the social context of “A Modest Proposal”, the reader would only grasp that people begged in the streets for money to support themselves and their families. However, if we examine the economic reasons as well, the reader understand that this was the only means that people could provide for themselves, as a result of the conditions landowners left their tenants with, and the British ignoring Ireland’s precarious economic situation. Finally, with a new historicist approach to literature, the reader understand that the author is influenced deeply by the mental operations, society, and ideologies they are in, so that their work will be a representation of those points.
