A Cut Above the Rest: Doctor's Life

Most kids always dream that one day, they will become a doctor. As they grow older, however, they realize exactly how much hard work is put into the job. The life of a surgeon is not easy, as it requires patience and dedication every single day. From standing on their feet for twelve or more hours at a time to the inconsistent sleep schedule, being a surgeon can be taxing in every aspect of life. However, surgeons gain the opportunity to help people from all over the country and make an impact in the medical world. The surgical field is definitely not for everyone, but for those who are willing to put in the hard work, perseverance, and dedication it takes to get through college, medical school, and other various exams, it will soon become a very rewarding job, getting the opportunity to make a permanent difference in peoples’ lives.
Being a surgeon is very demanding physically, mentally, and emotionally. Most surgeons are expected to work long, irregular hours and sometimes overnight (Bureau of Labor Statistics). They are often on-call, which means they need to be available to come into the hospital in case of emergency. Along with the varying hours, surgeons work in sterile environments for long periods of time, sometimes eight or more hours, to treat injury and disease (Occupational Outlook Handbook 457). The job of a surgeon is to treat and remove certain diseases in the human body. There are many different categories that surgeons can specialize in; these include orthopedic surgery, neurological surgery, cardiovascular surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, and general surgery (457). ...Board Certification”). Beginning one’s medical career is very highly competitive, which is why board certification is greatly recommended in order to obtain a secure job for the future.
If making a difference in the lives of many people is a source of satisfaction, while being able to withstand the physical and mental demands of schooling and certification required, then obtaining a job as a surgeon could be the way to go. Surgeons have always been needed and will continue to prosper, as the percent change of employment in the next ten years is 18%; faster than average (Bureau of Labor Statistics). This shows that the surgical field is only growing, which provides more opportunity for future jobs in this profession. Even though schooling is tough and can be expensive, it pays off in the end and, as a surgeon, one will continue to learn and grow every day on the job.
