Surgical Technologist Personal Statement

I have been in healthcare for about 6 years now. I started off as a nutritionist in a hospital setting, working with patients of all health statuses. I worked closely with doctors to determine what meal plan would best suit each patient. I went to work day after day to meet a new group of patients who were previously admitted the night before; very rarely did I work long term with one particular patient. Although I enjoyed helping people change their eating habits and educating them on how to better their health, at the end of the day I felt like there was something missing; I wanted more. I knew I wanted to work with people; I wanted further involvement, I wanted to see the results of my hard work, I wanted to make a difference in others lives. I went back to school to become a Surgical Technologist. As a student, I accepted a job at the hospital I interned at. After being in the operating room all day, I constantly was asking to stay late to finish a case or help with whatever needed to be done. My job contains a great deal of direct patient contact, to say the least. I assist the surgeon in whichever surgery the patient needs. I participate in helping cure, stabilize, comfort, and add to the patients' treatment. In order to be a good surgical tech, you must always be one step ahead of the surgeon, which inquires extensive knowledge of human anatomy and the symptoms that accompany an illness. Identifying anatomical landmarks and the normality of organs are also important qualities to have when assisting in surgery. Because I provide the surgeon with medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions it is crucial to know the proper usage of each, along with the side effects, patient's allergies, and contradictions of certain medications and their reactive
