In this essay I am going to talk about Hamm’s conception of education which is broken down into three general uses of education, the Sociological use (E1), Institutional use (E2) and the General enlightenment use (E3). I will also critically discuss the three uses of education providing a distinct and compatible argument and also bring it to the South African schooling system. General enlightenment also states that education is not a tool to empower people financially but it is the knowledge they acquire to change the way they think by deepening their understanding. The two are also distinct because general enlightenment according to Hamm (1989) schools should not be educational institutions because people can acquire the any form of knowledge they seek. “If an educated person can be that one who has mastered a wide range of different types of knowledge, this characterization points beyond superficial acquaintance with things” ((Divala and Mathebula., 2013: p. 253). Our schooling requires a learner to pass from grade 1 – 12 before our he can be labeled as educated however if a learner drops out before having reached the 12th grade he is considered uneducated, our society doesn’t distinct between a dropout and someone who has never attended school. Socialization is the term used to refer to the process of inheriting and circulating norms, customs and ideologies, providing an individual with the skills and habits necessary for participating within his or her own society. Socialization is in short the means by which social and cultural continuity is gotten. Ricky and Lafayette and four other boys make up their own gang called the four corner hustlers. The academic essay, “The Social Foundations of Human Experience”, by Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann written in 1966 is an interesting take on the socialization of human beings. It provides a myriad of information and ideas promoting readers to think about how socialization, as well as social structures effect both society and individual beings. Socialization is a lifelong process of acquiring one’s personal identity; when we interact within the four agents of socialization—family, school, media, and peer groups—we internalize norms, values, behavior, and social skills. Since our values, norms, and beliefs about society are first learned with family, family is the most important and influential agent of socialization.
Education is in itself a concept, which has changed over the millennia, can mean different things and has had differing purposes according to time and culture. Education may take place anywhere, is not constrained by bricks and mortar, delivery mechanisms or legislative requirements. Carr (2003. p19) even states, “education does not necessarily involve teaching”. Education, by one definition, is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life (education, n.d.).
The process of political socialization is not merely a quick development of ideologies, but an extended network of agents influencing us at every stage of our lives to implore us of good and proper behaviors and thought patterns to abide by. As stated in Texas politics, there is a difference in general socialization and political socialization, but both are significantly influential in our critical development patterns (3.1). General socialization begins in childhood with parents, grandparents, or caretakers. Simple verbal and nonverbal interactions taking place between those closest to us and our world around us creates ideas and beliefs and coaches us in how we should react to our environment. General socialization can be seen when children are punished for being inappropriate or impolite, or when their behaviors are reinforced by authority figures around them.
The education system and the peer group within the school system are important socialisation agents in an individual’s life. Children from an early age absorb the values, attitudes and beliefs of the society in which they participate (Ashman & Elkins, 2009).
The term socialization refers to the “lifelong social experience by which individuals develop their human potential and learn culture.” [Macionis et al. p 55] The concept of socialization is that our actions are driven/learned by culture. Socialization is also the foundation of personality, which we build by internalizing our surroundings. Through the lifelong process of socialization, society transmits culture from one generation to the next.
Socialization is a never ending process that continues to change our perspectives to help us learn and adapt to a social reality. This lifelo.ng process can be split up into two different parts; primary socialization, the first socialization an individual undergoes in childhood, and secondary socialization, when an individual adapts to a specific group within society. Although one may believe that secondary socialization has more power over primary socialization since it is current and therefore more relevant, primary socialization has more authority considering that it lays down the foundation for all future socializations. Our initial values, attitudes, and actions are more important since we internalize them
The process of socialisation is one where a child develops into an individual that respects customs, laws and norms of society (Beal, 1994). Previous research has established that parents are the primary influence on the role development in the early years of one’s life (Kaplan, 1999). Socialization is the relational process between children and their parents and its aim is to build identity (Crespi, 2003). Gender identities and the expectations of male and female roles are socialized within the parents-children relationship; such expectations are still seen today (Muncie et al, 1999). As children go into the educational system, there is a continuation of traditional expectations for boys and girls (Kaplan, 1999).
What is socialization? Socialization is the process in which we as people become members of society. As individuals our sense of belonging is shaped through the agents of socialization. The agents of socialization that contribute to the shaping of an individual’s sense of belonging to a group consist of educational institutes, peers, Mass media, family, and religious institutes. The five agents of socialization play a large roles in an individual’s perspective on the way of life, behavior, social interaction and how the communicate with other members of the group. Socialization is the process of passing down norms, customs, and ideologies that are important to the society by the previous generations to the younger generations. The school system is a social agency that was created to enhance the processes of socialization through education. The importance of school as an agent of socialization can be best explained by the amount of time students spend in school and in activities happen around school. The manifest functions of school are to educate students the social norms, and the knowledge and skills that help them become economically productive in order to benefit the society. But students not only learn from the academic curriculum but they also benefit from socialize with their teachers and peers.
