9/11: The Diverse Perspectives

On September 11, 2001, the north and south towers of the World Trade Center complex were destroyed when American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into them. It was at around 8:46 AM when the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, crashed into the north tower. At 9:03 AM, the second plane, United Airlines Flight 175, crashed into the south tower. Not only were the towers hit, but also the Pentagon via American Airlines Flight 77. The number of casualties that occurred at the World Trade Center was 2, 823, this included airline passengers. On board Flight 11 were 92 people, 64 on Flight 175 and 64 on Flight 77. The victims came from more than 90 countries in the world. It took about 99 days for the fires at Ground Zero to be doused completely. The twin towers collapsed within two hours. The surrounding buildings were severely damaged by debris and fire, including our own Fiterman Hall.

The economic impact surrounding 9/11 was of immense consequence. $15 billion of aid packages were passsed by Congress to bail out the airlines. $9.3 billion was the cost of insurance claims. $60 billion went down with the towers, along with damage done to the surrounding buildings, subway facilities and infrastructures. $123 billion, the economic loss during the first 2 weeks after the disaster as well as a decline in airline travel over the next couple of years. The cleanup at Ground Zero officially ended on May 30, 2002 and it took 3.1 million hours of labor to clean up 1.8 million tons of debris, and the total cost of this cleanup was $750 million. A popular incident was when a Sikh by the name of Balbir Singh was shot dead, mistaken to be a Muslim or a “terrorist” because of the turban he was wearing. Balbir was shot dead on September 15, 2001 in Mesa Arizona. From an FBI report, hate crime incidents against the Muslim faith grew from only 28 in 2000 to 481 in 2001. Many Mosques were attacked and shut down. A controversy also sparked when a community center for Muslims was in works, referred to as “Ground Zero Mosque.” Many protests and oppositions took place because its location being close to Ground Zero.
