A woman walks in the sidewalk, her dirty blonde hair swinging left and right as she picks up her pace. She punches in a number on her phone and holds it up to her ear. It is a cold night, and she regrets wearing the blue dress she just bought yesterday. “Hello?” a voice at the other end of the call says. The woman sighs. “Jake, where were you? I’ve been trying to call you for hours. I’m between 26th and Avenue A, can you pick me up? I’m freezing.” “I’m in 54th Street so it might take a while to reach you. Can you wait for me?” the voice asks. The woman looks at her surroundings. A mother holding her daughter’s hand walk by her. The little girl jumps over some puddles as she walks. The small street lamp beside her is barely enough to light up the alley. She puts her phone on her shoulder and holds it in place with her cheek as she rubs her cold hands. “I guess I’ll be taking a taxi.” There was a short pause. “Are you sure?” “I’m sure,” Katelyn Grace says,”I’ll meet you at Mom and Dad’s house.” “See you there.” “Bye, Jake.” she takes her phone and hangs up. The alley in front of her looks like the alleys she sees in horror movies. But then again, she is freezing. She grips her phone tighter in her fist and walks in the alley. As she walks in further, she feels more and more relaxed. Her surroundings don’t scare her as much as it does before. Her face lights up like a Christmas tree when she spots a street at the end of the alley. “Hello there.” a soft voice greets from behind. Katelyn Grace whips around. A man with a lithe frame is standing in front of her, his hands in his pockets. His dark blue eyes seem friendly and welcoming. His brown hair is swept to the side and his chin and most of his cheeks are covered with stubble. He wears a light brown canvas jacket with a black t-shirt underneath.
