9 April 2015 Airport Security When it comes to traveling around the world, airfare is the way that most people take. Travelers in the United States rely heavily on airport security to prevent any troubles while taking that route. Travelers need to be able to trust the airport security to prevent life threatening situations, whether that would be in the airport or in the air. Airport security is such a huge scandal because of the target that airplanes have for terrorists. Terrorists look to airlines to wipe out a group of people or even to just make a statement. Although airport security is such a huge phenomenon now, it wasn’t always. It wasn’t until the terrorist attack on 9/11 that “woke up” American airports. This attack brought worldwide pressure on airport security to prevent that from ever happening again. Change and improvement in airport security has been constant ever since 9/11. The night was tempestuous and my emotions were subtle, like the flame upon a torch. They blew out at the same time that my sense of tranquility dispersed, as if the winds had simply come and gone. The shrill scream of a young girl ricocheted off the walls and for a few brief seconds, it was the only sound that I could hear. It was then that the waves of turmoil commenced to crash upon me. It seemed as though every last one of my senses were succumbed to disperse from my reach completely. As everything blurred, I could just barely make out the slam of a door from somewhere alongside me and soon, the only thing that was left in its place was an ominous silence.
During an interview of three family members, I was able to learn more information about the events of 9/11. My mom, Jamie Goldman, was the first person I interviewed. She told me she was helping a friend with her new business in Aiken, SC. She first heard on the radio, breaking news, that a plane had flown into one of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center. Her first thought was that a plane had crashed accidentally. As the day went on, she learned of even more horrible acts against our country, and then realized our Nation was under attack from terrorist. My mom was heartbroken, scared, sad, and mad all at the same time. She struggles with forgiving the terrorist but knows that God would want her to forgive them. The song "God Bless the USA" is a song that helps my mom cope with the events of 9/11. My mom did not know anyone personally that was killed or injured on 9/11. She said, "after 9/11, our country has been a country at war. We have stopped loving our neighbors and instead, started judging them."
The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2011 prompted the world to reevaluate and drastically modify airport and airline security. “Four targets had been chosen, all iconic American buildings that would send a clear message of the depth of their hatred for the United States. All four planes crashed, killing all on board—terrorists, crew members, and passengers, along with hundreds who were killed inside the structures, on the ground, and the men and women who ran into collapsing buildings in an effort to try and save others” (Smutz 1). As Jason Villemez said “the decade after the 9/11 attacks reshaped many facets of life in America” (Villemez 1). Before the attacks, people did not think that large scale hostility towards innocent people in our country was remotely possible. Ever since that fateful moment, citizens in America are on their toes every day worrying about another attack happening. United States citizens have had to adapt and change in response to this fear of further terrorist assault on our country. One of the ways they have adapted is by changing their means of security concerning airline travel.
After 9/11 there was a great increase in security nationwide. One major example of this is the number of agencies created as a result of 9/11. Among these agencies include the creation of the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), the DHS (The Department of Homeland Security), the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and lastly the massive advancement of the US Coast Guard. Every one of the budgets of these agencies has doubled since 9/11. The creation of the transportation and security administrations primary goal is to improve the safety of all American Citizens traveling by plane. The TSA started implementing, new policies and new technological advancements.
It was the year 2010 and a dog that had survived 9/11 was depressed because, her owner died in 9/11. She was a search dog at 9/11, is 9 years old now, a German Shepard, and a police dog. The dogs name is Karis and a family with only a mother took Karis in. There was one daughter named Velma. Mother is the dogs police partner.
Thesis: The 9/11 attacks are the airports more restrictive on what you can bring on a plane.
The security at airports has continued to tighten based on the numerous threats against the people of the United States. The greatest level of concern is the terrorist attacks on New York’s World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 (Airport). After terrorists of Al Qaeda hijacked four planes and intentionally flew two of them in the World Trade Center, the government formed the Transportation Security Administration, TSA, to enforce rules of what someone could carry on a flight. The new TSA and rules though did not prevent others from threatening the country. Eight years after the attacks on the World Trade Center, Umar Abdulmutallab, known as the Christmas Day bomber, got on a flight while hiding a bomb in his underwear (Airport). 9-11 was a very tragic point in United States because it made the nation feel helpless. Many people were killed during 9-11, 2,977 died during the events. Local fire departments tried to help but some were able too. Many firefighters were angry because they wanted to help but a few of them were sent out. When the first plane hit many people needed to evacuate but eventually stopped by security guards. Then another plane hit the second tower. It took an hour and thirty minutes for both towers to completely collapse. All airlines were shut down during the attacks preventing anybody from leaving. People were shocked and scared because it came from nowhere and nobody expected it to happen. 9-11 is an tragic event that caught many people by surprise,
If these problems were fixed during the election then the election would’ve been more fair but sadly it was not fixed.
There were numerous events and threats leading up to the terrorists attacks on the World Trade Center which left chaos amongst the streets of downtown New York City and would leave America and its families devastated and prone to change after this infamous date in our nation’s history. What happened on September 11th, 2001 was without a doubt both horrific and ill natured. Multiple terrorists hijacked several US airliners that would later be flown into the North and South towers, the Pentagon, and also an unintended area in Pennsylvania. It can be said that the United States of America was unprepared and vulnerable for these occurrences.
9/11 has changed the world in many ways and some of these changes are irreversible or just hard to change. This marked date in time has affected us through the economy, attitudes toward Muslims and the security this country has. 9/11 has made the people of America hate Muslims and pay millions of dollars to attack and protect. American has upgraded their security so something like what happened on 9/11 would be prevented.

Does the thought of going through airport security make you want to jump off a bridge? Some people may think that security in airports is either too strict, or it is not enforced enough. Airport security has certainly developed over time, both in terms of more technology, and in terms of increased security. It has had a lot of reasons to step up, both with terrorist attacks, and with other incidents, such as the way that explosive technology has evolved. The topic of airport security is a big debate: is it too strict or not strict enough? It is important that people know and understand both sides of this important issue.
Dealing with matters of national security is no joke, especially for anybody who works in the aviation field. Hundreds, if not thousands, of threats are made every day against the security of the United States, and many of these instance occur within airports or are directed towards airplanes. There has been an increase in aviation security and overall airport security as a result of the attack on September 11, 2011. Due to the increase of threats and needed authority to counteract and diminish these cases, the seriousness of security at any airline and airport is of one of the highest priorities in the nation. It was the rash of airline hijackings in the 60s-70s that inspired the use of metal detectors at the airport to prevent passengers from bringing onboard any weapons they may use to hijack the plane. As airport security gets tighter terrorists are plotting to defeat those security measures. Airport metal detectors are just a speed bump and many other measures had to be put in place to ensure people are able to travel safely. Airport security continues to get more advanced.
