In 1984, Winston wants to love Julia, but it is wrong for them to have feelings for each other. Whereas in Brave New World, Lenina is upset because John does not have the same feelings for her. Likewise in both novels, it is strange to love another person. Winston feels a connection to O’Brien because he feels like they can rebel against the Party together. It’s so strange to care about people other than yourself in both dystopian novels, that no one does for example O’Brien turns Winston into the thought police. This quote from Mussolini perfectly illustrates his aggressive leadership style and fierce personality. George Orwell was clearly inspired by Benito Mussolini whose characteristics are evident in the character of Big Brother in Orwell’s brilliant novel 1984. Benito Mussolini and Big Brother are considered dictators who have sole control of their countries, Italy and Oceania. Mussolini runs his Italian National Fascist party and Big Brother runs his ‘Party’. Both dictators have some slight differences, but Mussolini and Big Brother have similarities in leadership style, propaganda use, and enforcement of order through secret police.
Communism, as Karl Marx puts it, is a world where everyone is equal, where there are no social class, where there are no private ownership, where work is used only to produce the necessities, the people are under a control in which allows them to be on the same level as everyone else. What Stalin wanted to do was create and fulfill the governmental system of Karl Marx and create and envision the utopia that Karl Marx was led to believe. Under Stalin’s rule we come to see that his vision of a utopia quickly warps into a dystopia.

Different societies have risen and fallen in the common search for the “perfect” civilization. In the books 1984 by George Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, both authors portray a dystopian society with some troubling similarities. Orwell and Huxley each stress the use of power to control the masses. This influence is always situated with a small group of individuals that uses it to control every aspect of the people’s lives. Using such a method brings to mind a severe totalitarianism of rigid control that terminates individuality. Each society makes use of a caste system. Each caste has certain tasks and rules it must follow. Any sign of individuality is immediately disciplined and the societies are set up so the people will never question the morals or humaneness of their situation. Such concepts have been stopped from common thought so the people in power remain in power. Religion has been eliminated and logical thought have been destroyed. George Orwell has created two main characters that have conflicting traits believe in the idea of love in a world where it is forbidden. Although both are secret rebels of the Party and share the same hatred for the Party’s totalitarian power, Julia and Winston display a remarkable number of differences between each other. The differences between them include their morality, their motivation towards the rebellion, and their personalities.
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley has a similar theme as to Nineteen Eighty-four by George Orwell. The theme is that the government has control over their society by brainwashing them. The difference is that Nineteen Eighty-four does their brainwashing by torture and fear and Brave New World does it by making happy by letting them have whatever they want. Brainwashing is persuasion by propaganda or salesmanship (Webster). The controller does exactly that in the book. Most people would probably pick Brave New World to live in over the other novel, but digging deep into the novel we realize this world is not a good one. People might act to be happy, but that’s because the government raises them to think this way before they are even born. Our society also has a bunch of brainwashing going on by our government and companies. Even though this book was written way before our time today, the author was a good predictor to what it might become in the future. I do not think it has got to the extreme point as Brave New World though. Three areas that people are being brainwashed is in the military, advertising, and the news. Brainwashing is done throughout the book of Brave New World to control the society to believe everything is for the best.
According to Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death, Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World both predicted that society would eventually be governed by a global totalitarian system; however, the key difference between both their predictions is the method by which society’s cognizance would be undermined. The definition of a government is “a governing body of a nation state, and community”(Merriam-Webster). The Dystopian that we live in today is probably the same as in the book 1984 and the movie Divergent. However, there many other things that are different. One of those things is that there are no rebelling against. Also there is no different parties within the government. Most importantly, our government doesn’t control what the people do, and they don’t force people to do anything. People today can do and say what they want without the government knowing, or without the government looking over your shoulder. The Party, ruled by Big Brother, controls everything about the people of Oceania, including their thoughts, language, etc. The Party for the most part forbids making love with other people, but Winston Smith falls in love with a girl named Julia, and does not care what The Party thinks. Julia teaches Winston what love is, and Winston realizes, indeed, he loves her. However, that loves vanishes when Winston is put in Room 101.

In George Orwell’s 1984, the strategies used by Oceania’s Political Party to achieve total control over the population are similar to the ones employed by Joseph Stalin during his reign. Indeed, the tactics used by Oceania’s Party truly depicts the brutal totalitarian society of Stalin’s Russia. In making a connection between Stalin’s Russia and Big Brothers’ Oceania, each Political Party implements a psychological and physical manipulation over society by controlling the information and the language with the help of technology.
For example, Orwell shows readers a statement regarding the Proles of the society on page 161, “The masses never revolt of their own accord, and they never revolt merely because they are oppressed. Indeed, so long as they are not permitted to have standards of comparison, they never even become aware that they are oppressed.” ( Orwell,207). The proles in Oceania are the outcasts of society, yet they have the potential to rebel against the principals of the Party. However, Winston recognizes that the Party has blinded them, causing them to be unaware of the conditions in which they are living in. Furthermore, Orwell adds a thought of Winston’s relating to his relationship with Julia by claiming, “ But you could not have pure love or pure lust nowadays. No emotion was pure, because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred. Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow struck against the Party. It was a political act.” (Orwell,126). The Party restricts citizens from doing things as simple as feeling emotions. Nevertheless, Julia and Winston often perform actions considered illegal by the Party. Relationships are intolerable in Oceania; even family bonds do not exist.
