In the winter of 1777 to the summer of 1778, George Washington had a winter camp called Valley Forge. It was a very difficult place to live but most soldiers toughed it out for their country, for their freedom and for America. It was cold, sickness was thriving, food was disgusting but I would have stayed and fought through it for my country because there were other brave soldiers that stuck with it so I would too, Washington is getting congress to help with the terrible conditions, and I do not want to be a summer soldier because they stop when times get rough and I want to stay the entire time for my freedom. The conditions at Valley Forge were horrible, yes, but there were brave soldiers who stayed strong throughout all of the hardships.
To make matters worse they had to deal with smallpox more dangerously than that is Lice because they rarely bathed or washed themselves or had laundered clothing. Another horrible things that Martin and his soldiers had to deal with was typhus a potential killer disease characterized by usually high fevers and red sports on the skin. Typhus took the lives of most of the Valley Forge Martin was under the brigade command of General James M. Varnum but his actual commander was Colonial John Durkee of the 4th Connecticut regiment, since Varnum was elsewhere. Some of the soldiers left because all they did was work it was cold and they had bad clothing like worn out shoes and they were getting sick but not all left some stayed loyal and times got even harder but they were so devoted to stay and fight for their freedom. Goal: Have the general public understand why the army stayed at Valley Forge, and what the soldiers did here in order to survive the winter encampment.
Valley Forge, was the toughest obstacle the Continental Army had to face during the Revolutionary War. For about nine months in the cold winter, these soldiers stayed in this area for them to"... be close enough to Philadelphia to keep an eye on the British"(Background). By the end of the war, the colonists were victorious in gaining their independence. Regardless, I would abandon my position as a soldier at Valley Forge. My reasoning are due to the multiple hardship they endure such as living in a harsh environment, sickness that lead to death and lacked numerous resources.

He later uses them to cross the icy Potomac to win the very important Battle of Trenton. The importance of this battle is that it raises the morale of the soldiers. After this, Howe decides to go into winter quarters. Washington and his army do the same, but would occasionally strike against the redcoats whenever they went foraging for supplies for themselves and their horses. After that first winter the Americans and British continued their war.

The factors that we undergo make us sick both physically and mentally, these factors make us lose all sense of empowerment to win this war that we once felt, these factors make us want to go home more than anything just to hear our mother’s voice just once more. According to Document A, there were 12,000 soldier in valley forge during December 1777. By February 1778 there were only 8,000 soldiers. From December to June 1,800 to 2,500 soldiers died. In December there were 2,898 soldiers sick and by February there were 3,989 soldiers sick. About 50% of soldiers were sick in February. They need help caring for the sick and dying. If I stayed I could help the sick and wounded instead of leaving all the fallen soldiers behind.
Throughout history, Americans have sought to spread the spirit of equality, which is believed to be the realization of true freedom. Before establishing this freedom, every American had only one question stuck in their head: What is freedom? Our country received it in the year of 1776 from the British through a series of difficulties and wars. African Americans defined it as an escape from slavery, while immigrants defined it as their acceptance into a new society. More yet, women of the women’s suffrage defined their freedom as their recognition into society and for their rights to be equal to that of every other man. These different perceptions of cultures/groups in America tied together to form an American view of freedom. Freedom is something that every American should be willing to do anything in order to maintain. We may have weapons of mass destruction, but when it comes to living in a peaceful, American lifestyle, our freedom is our greatest weapon.
The day to day life for the regular soldier was not glorious. Many times the regiments were low on supplies such as food and clothing. They lived in the elements. Medical conditions were grotesque because of the lack of advanced equipment and anesthesia. “Discipline was enforced with brutality” as if all the other conditions were not bad enough.
At Valley Forge, December 1777- June 1778. Washington and his Continental army would be staying here for 6 months and it was a very difficult place to live because it was very cold, a lot people are sick, and low on supplies but some are leaving and others are staying. Would you have quit Valley Forge? I would have stayed at Valley Forge because only 15% of people are dying, there is help on the way, and because of the inspirational words of Thomas Paine.
It was 1864 when Horatio Kirkland Foote was taken to a prison camp. Horatio was taken to Andersonville which is located in south-west Georgia where within the 14 months that the prison was open over 45,000 other people were taken as well. Andersonville was the largest prison camp out of more than 150 recorded camps between both sides. When Horatio was at Andersonville, the conditions were vile along with all prison camps of the Civil War. If you were in one of the prisons you could expect to be deprived of clothing, nutrition, and stable living conditions. It is said that Horatio ''bunked'' (they were got actually given rooms or romates but Horatio shared blankets so they would stay warm better) with three others. As was said earlier living conditions were unstable Horatio and his three ''roommates'' were using few blankets to make a haven for the duration that they were together. Later Horatio was sent on a train from Andersonville to Charleston which is located in South Carolina. When they first arrived he was so debilitated that he was barley able to stand on his own due to an illness he acquired on the train. Fortunately unlike many others, Horatio was able to fight off the illness and become as virile as a person could get in a place of such conditions. He became equipped with better clothes and a blanket to keep warm from a boy who gave them to Horatio just before he passed away.
The war scarred the soldiers permanently, if not physically then mentally. After the war the soldiers usually never recovered from the war. Two of the most common side affects of the war were shell shock and stir crazy. When suffering from shell shock a soldier’s brain doesn’t function properly and the man is a “vegetable”. This means the man is alive but he can’t do anything because he is in a state of shock because of the war. Stir crazy is a mental illness caused by the firing of so many bullets that when no bullets are heard by the victim he goes insane. Everyone was scared to go to war when it started. Young recruits were first sent because the veterans knew they were going to come back dead. "When we run out again, although I am very excited, I suddenly think: “where’s Himmelstoss?” Quickly I jump back into the dug-out and find him with a small scratch lying in a corner pretending to be wounded.” (P 131) Even the big men like Himmelstoss are scared to go fight. They too go through the mental illnesses like stir crazy and shell shock. “He is in a panic; he is new to it too.
