Transformation is prevalent in the ever-changing world, whether the outcome is desirable or undesirable. In the final paragraph of Kafka’s “Metamorphosis”, Gregor’s metamorphosis and death results in transformations of Samsa family. When analysing the last paragraph, Gregor’s family embraces a new light, with new hopes for the future, which contrasts with the initial feeling of darkness and despair. The transformation of the Samsa family is evident in the change in atmosphere, change in setting, and through the use of symbolism. Although atmosphere is not directly connected to the characters, there are indirect connections as the atmosphere reflects the interiority of the characters. The atmosphere changes from the hopelessness of poverty and darkness to the hopefulness that comes with the chance to prosper and feeling of freedom, created through the actions of the family. Not only does the atmosphere change, the setting is shifted from a dark and claustrophobic apartment, to the openness and warmth of outside as the family goes for a walk together for the first time in since the Gregor’s transformation. Kafka also uses symbolism to exhibit the metamorphosis of Grete, transforming from a young innocent girl to a responsible and mature woman. With the changes in atmosphere and setting, in addition to the use of symbolism, the overall transformations of the Samsa family are revealed. As Gregor transforms into an insect for the worse, the remaining Samsa members experience the darkness that Gregor brings with his metamorphosis and change for the better. The Samsa family no longer relies on the income of Gregor and works hard to achieve their own success.
