Throughout the graphic novel, V for Vendetta, by Alan Moore, V aims to bring down the government and create a utopian society where everyone has the right to freedom, justifying his unconventional actions with the potential fall of the government. V murders the Bishop, Anthony Lilliman, to silent the government’s voice control over religion. V also tortures Evey Hammond psychologically to prepare her for the duty of bringing down the government. Furthermore, V’s actions drive Rose Almond to the edge where she has to seek vengeance in the government by assassinating the leader, Adam Susan. In the novel, the totalitarian government and the religion are closely associated such that they are both corrupted. Lilliman’s perverted character is disclosed when he says, ‘It’s not one of the usual girls. She’s a little older.’ The word, ‘usual’, proves that the bishop is a frequent offender of child abuse, and he indulges in sexual pleasure which stains the purity in religion. This implies that the government manipulates the preaching of religion by condoning the bishop’s behaviour. In the end, the bishop is punished in a form of poetic justice, where the corrupted bishop, who poisoned the faith, is in turn poisoned with cyanide. Unlike other incidences in the story, the killing of the bishop achieves its two purposes. It not only prevents the propaganda from staining the purity of religion, but also undermines the government’s power to use religion for propaganda purposes. To achieve complete success, V resorts to unconventional tactics such as murder and manipulation. The bishop is punished in the form of poetic justice, while Evey Hammond is forced with V’s idea though eventually embracing it. Rose experiences traumatic loss of her husband whom V kills. The three characters in the novel manipulated by V, are all political sacrifices of the conflict between freedom and anarchy, who play as an extremely important role in determining the success of disassembling the government.
