Back in the day, adolescents would smoke conventional cigarettes to promote maturity, edginess and rebellion. Now, in present day our society has shifted to the use of electronic cigarettes, the new gateway promoting a healthier alternative towards teenage rebellion, the quest of transitioning from adolescence to adulthood and nicotine addiction. Researchers and creators of the “gateway” theory Eric and Denise Kandel had expanded their previous hypothesis that focused on nicotine usage being the main gateway drug that promoted and often linked to marijuana and cocaine usage. To further determine that the new e-cig trend is also a main gateway promoting the same trends as nicotine and the use of real non-electronic tobacco products. Concluding that introducing e-cigs and nicotine to non-smoking kids extends the likelihood of a nicotine addiction. In contrast, regulation is basically another form that is freely and directly advertising to adolescents and making more susceptible to use due to its possible unavailability and censorship, the banning of e-cig promotion may lead to more people wanting to do partake in smoking. People will start to visualize e-cigs to be the more acceptable and preferred method than cigarettes, not as the alternative of smoking versus not smoking. It will be less common for people to be deciding whether or not they smoke but rather if they smoke e-cigs or traditional cigarettes, and the time frame to choose this decision has gotten younger and younger.
