Gas Engine Essay

Do diesels have more torque and horsepower than gas engines? Diesel engines have more torque out of them because they have more compression. They have a compression ratio of (17:10) (Schifsky). This ratio explain the diesel and air mixture in the engine of a diesel engine. Gas engine has quit a bit less compression. They have (9:1) compression ratio (Schifsky).Gas engine has less compression with gas and air in the engine chamber. Gas engines have a slight advantage on horsepower because they can turn more rotations per minutes (RPM). The fuel mileage out of them are about equal unless the vehicle is hauling a load the mileage advantage will go to the diesel because the torque gives a better mileage. The advantage will go to diesels more than …show more content…

Diesel motors do not have power, but they have the torque for hauling and pulling. This in returns means they have more torque in there motors. They are made for drag on the motor and last longer with more strain. They have more compression in the cylinders which makes and generates more torque than horsepower out of the motor. The cylinder is the part of the motor that has the piston, and where the fuel goes to create combustion. The compression ratio is (17:10 verse gas which is (9:1) (Schifsky). The high compression means they do not turn very many RPM (rotations per minute). Diesels have lower RPM in return makes less acceleration and speed for more torque and slightly less horsepower than gas motors. Diesels do not have spark plugs which means they start on high compression. They have less maintenance than gas motors. Most diesels have longer spanned of time between oil changes. Gas motors go three to six thousands miles. Diesels go eight to twelve thousand …show more content…

They have 33% more efficiency out of diesel fuel than gas. Diesels usually give close to forty miles to a gallon out of them depending on the size of the vehicle (Almeida). They have ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel that has improved exhaust treatments. They also have come up with biodiesel fuel to help make these standards on diesel vehicles. This is made of vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant grease. Such as french fry grease and used oil. ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and biodiesel fuel are cleaner burning fuel than petroleum based diesel fuel. There 's one downside to biodiesel fuel it is a dirty fuel when it comes to the fuel lines and fuel system of a diesel. If it is not properly refined and prepared. Their is a farm fuel for diesels that is illegal to use in on road vehicles. If it is a farm truck or tractor, they can burn farm fuel it is dyed red for easy identification. It has a higher sulfur count for off the road diesels for better performance and more power out of the
