The three major religions were sequential in their organization and thus share some common beliefs. Judaism was the first of the modern religions and was created by the prophet Abraham. He received the word of God and believed that his people, the Hebrews, were God’s chosen ones. Christianity was built upon the teachings of Judaism and grew through the prophet Jesus, who was seen as the Messiah that would save mankind. Islam recognizes parts of Judaism and Christian and adds its own teachings and beliefs. While all three religions are similar in origin and share some beliefs, they are different enough to cause conflict between their followers.
At the core of the religions, all three believe in a God and in an afterlife which can be achieved by living according to sacred rules of the religion. They all believe in being charitable, helping the less fortunate, and respecting your elders. While all three religions are monotheistic and believe in only one true God, that God is different between the three. The Hebrews believe in a God whose name is so sacred it was not written or spoken, the Christians believe that Jesus ascended to Heaven and became God after his death, and the Muslims believe in a God named Allah. They also all believe that Jerusalem is a sacred place which holds special significance for each. Because of this, Jerusalem has been a source of conflict as long as the religions have existed. Throughout history, Jerusalem has been occupied and controlled by one of the religions and each has left its mark on the city. The Hebrew king David built towers and battlements, the Christians made it a military outpost, and the Muslims built a mosque. Islam spread and grew through its simplicity, and also through militarism and economic opportunity. As cities came under Muslim control, the trade between other cities flourished.
While the basic teachings of all three religions are relatable to all of mankind, such as giving to the poor and meek, living a modest and gracious life, and respecting others, their intolerance for those who do not share the same beliefs are a cause for strife and prejudice. Through tolerance and respect for others, as well as sharing sacred and religious structures and places, the followers of various religions can live in harmony with each other. Only through the acceptance of the differences of others will the major religions be able to share the world.
