The movie Cinderella Man by director Ron Howard is the story of James Braddock, A lightweight boxer with a great lifestyle and family who gets hit with the depression. When the stock market crash his lifestyle, and the lifestyle of millions of other people, is drastically changed for the worse. Now when he can he works at the docs moving goods and other merchandise to make just enough money for his family to be able to afford to eat ,get heat and get electricity. However by being given a second chance to be able to box again he manages and persevere and go against all odds to become an important figure to the average man in the great depression. Through this movie we see how the economic and social conditions of the depression worsened, how James and Mae were effected by the depression and what kind of characteristics James and Mae had to have to be able to endure and get through their economic hardship.
During the depression social and economic times reached an all time low and kept worsening. People were losing their houses and all their belongings which completely turned their life around. This resulted in people doing anything to satisfy their family or themselves. There was a lack of jobs, people were drinking, stealing and the harsh times were crating tension between family members. These were all shown in the movie as we see Howard stealing food to not be sent away somewhere else, or when Mike Wilson is seen drunk and fighting with his wife. We see the joblessness through many people such as James, Mike and even in Joe. The family tensions are seen with James and Mae with their fighting over James's boxing or Mike and his wife when he is drunk. The Depression hit the American industry but in reality it hurt the common man. Families like the Braddock's and the Wilson's were left with nothing and forced to start their lives over. The depression worsened, and ruined peoples lives. James and Mae were were one of there couples that had to endure hard times and it was their special traits and characteristics that got them trough. So the term Cinderella Man is very appropriate because he had nothing and managed to go to the top and beat all odds. In the end I think that this movie and this time can be put into one quote that was said by James Braddock “I have to believe that when things are bad, I can change them.”
Cinderella Man came out in the year 2005, it is a non fiction movie directed by Ron Howard. It is based on the story of a boxer during the Depression, James J. Braddock. Braddock had to over come many adversities such as the economical and societal conditions. Another adversity he had to overcome was living in the Depression and all the things that go along with that. Braddock’s character traits shown in the movie are all important and appropriate due to the harshness of those times.

The great depression was a very sad and hard time. This was a time where people had little money, no available jobs and just had a hard time with everything. Many people had nd any way to make money whether it was cutting kid’s hair in neighborhood, picking fruit, selling iron cords house to house or even painting a house for 5 dollars. Even though this was a very hard time some people still had hope that things would get better. This was a really bad time until Franklin Roosevelt who was for the government supporting the Americans and not the other way around became president.
The Great Depression is a an era when the US economy was at its lowest. It is after the Roaring 20s. The depression was caused mainly because of the crash of the stock market in 1929 and the government’s failed attempts to help the people. Many people’s belongings are bought with credit so they lost all their money and most of their things when the bank system failed. Others lost their jobs and many men left their families because they felt ashamed that they can’t support their family. The social fabric of the Great Depression changed greatly from the previous era. The changes in the social, the political, and the economic part of the US are part of the change in the social fabric.
Although times were hard, many people relied on local communities and churches to help them survive the Great Depression. The neighbors in the movie are supportive of each other; they all have the same financial struggles and they all have the same goals, to be able to work and take care of their families. With millions of Americans unemployed and many in danger of losing their homes, they could no longer support their families. Children, if they were lucky, wore torn up ragged clothing to school and those who were not lucky remained without clothes. The food supply was scarce, and bread was the most that families could afford. Households would receive very limited rations of food, or small amounts of money to buy food.

In the great depression many people suffered from hunger and poverty can you imagine not being able to eat for days and days and not only that but imagine having to suffer from sands blowing away all your crops and destroying your home. That’s how it was back then, people suffered from hunger and sandstorms destroyed everything in their paths. John Steinbeck a very well know writer and the creator of “The Grapes of Wrath” is very well known for writing books during the great depression in which he liked to write about the poor, homeless and misfit people. Humility is very well described in the book “The Grapes of Wrath” because it tells about a man trying to take care of his children with the little money he has while also trying to get to California. In the story the man’s humility changes the waitress’s behavior because she feels sympathy towards the man even though she was being a stereotype at the beginning.
The Cinderella Man In the movie the Cinderella man who is called James jay Braddock and he is a fighter and in his first fight he broke his hand and had a cast on for 6-8 weeks when he broke his hand the second time he got deregisted from the boxing industry until his hand was healed he could get back into the boxing industry so he could fight again and he fights to keep his family out of poverty. At the start of the movie he was fighting a boxer and he won a lot of money and then in a week or two he had no money left to feed his wife and children and he suffered in the great depression badly cause it was hard to get a job to earn money to get food for his family and one of his kids got sick so he went down to the docks to get work to earn Money
