The Daunting Task of Making Our Environment Clean and Healthy

2766 Words6 Pages

Maintaining clean and healthy environments can be a daunting task, especially when cleanliness must be maintained in large, metropolitan areas. Creating a clean space for large numbers of people requires a careful eye for details and strategic planning for the best waste management practices. Waste management practices range from many sources and may vary based on the amount of land mass available and population size. Throughout the United Kingdom, these practices include recycling, composting, gasification, and landfill usage as a means of controlling trash and other waste substances. In this research paper, I will discuss the ways in which the United Kingdom controls waste throughout its countries and how might these processes be effective practices. Furthermore, I will analyze the waste treatment processes and explore why these processes might improve the environment for the United Kingdom citizens.
In order to understand how waste affects the United Kingdom, one must understand the definition of waste. In the United Kingdom, there is about 430 million tons of waste produced each year. In addition to the creation of waste, about 7% of this waste is considered municipal solid waste. (Dalton, 2004). Considering the large amount of waste generated, one might ask, ‘Where does this waste come from and how is it accumulated?’ According to the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), “Waste is an inevitable by-product of our use of natural resources.” (Dalton, 2004). More specifically, wastes can be defined as any material deemed not to be useful or without purpose. There are several types of wastes that contaminate and pollute our environments. These wastes include, agricultural waste, industrial, quarry, construc...

...to improve the ways in which municipal solid wastes are disposed. Minding the way in which wastes are disposed, positive waste management practices have been created and used in the United Kingdom. Three of the most effective practices for waste management include, reuse and recycling, composting, and gasification/ incineration practices. Each of these practices have effective components that limit the use of landfills and redirects the use of wastes. United Kingdom officials support these waste management practices through governmental and non-governmental regulations. Coupled with waste management technological progression and enforcement of regulations, the future of these waste management processes will be very effective in the long run. The ultimate goal for effective waste management practices is to improve on environmental factors and disposal strategies.
