A man walks through his door and sits down at scuffed wooden table with his wife. As they sift through a mound of bills for the month the man tells his wife that he has been laid off without pay from his automotive job. Already in rough times, with money already an issue, the man must find a way to provide for his family and not have the house fall into foreclosure. The automotive industry in America controlled our economy and kept it running for many years. High gas prices ruined the industry and crippled our economy. With unemployment skyrocketing at this time due to budget cuts and layoffs people began to spend less money and it hit our economy like a hurricane and created a ripple effect. They let us prosper by making cars that society liked and so they purchased them and put the money back to circulate through our economy. McArdle states “on the rise”(1). This quotation is perfect for a company like General Motors due to the fact that that is what they always were, a company that was profitable and kept supplying jobs to a society who desperately was hungry for them at all times. GM and other companies started to become arrogant and started producing larger cars that were huge and required more money to fill up and used more gas than people in society wanted to pay for. Colin Campbell in his article “The Decline of the North American Car” states, “American cars were once the epitome of style and a symbol of industrial power. But arrogance, desperation and greed changed all that”( 1 ). This shows that the power and might of these major corporations was the ultimate downfall for these supergiants. Arrogance and greed led to the fall which followed with desperation for money and began making cars that they could make more money off of to try to recover from the loses that they were having. This was the start of the fall of General Motors and auto industry as a whole. Robert J. Samuelson in his work “How to Bail Out General Motors” states, “General Motors, once the world 's mightiest industrial enterprise”( 1 ). This was the headlines for magazines, newspapers and online articles for the failing enterprise. This was a devastating blow to our economy and to us as a society with things like layoffs and budget cuts on the horizon for this iron fist of a company. Two major car companies, General Motors (GM) and Chrysler, went bankrupt during the Great Recession. The Government had to make a choice; to get involved with helping them, which would help the economy, or let them fight for themselves. Both choices would leave some American citizens mad at the government. The Government decided to help them by establishing the Auto Bailout along with other programs like TARP. Although some think the Auto Bailout didn’t help small supplier companies, it was the right move for the government to take because it helped stop our economy from going further into a depression.
The automaker Chevrolet has experienced much technological change in the past 104 years. Although it, Chevrolet, is a French name, it is an American car company. It was primarily founded by William C, Durant, along with Louis Chevrolet, on November 3, 1911. It wasn’t until six years of existence that it became part of the Automotive Division at General Motors, otherwise known as GM. Durant had previously tried to buy out Ford and failed. This caused him to resort to co-founding Chevrolet. The first car sold by the company commonly called Chevy was the Classic Six, at the price of 2,500 dollars. Entering the 1950s, no corporation even came close to General Motors in its size, or it's profits. GM was twice as big as the second biggest company in the world, Standard Oil of New Jersey (father of today's Exxon Mobil), and had a vast diversity of businesses ranging from home appliances to providing insurance and building Buicks, Cadillacs, Chevys, GMCs, Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs and trains. It was so big that it made more than half the cars sold in the United States and the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust division was threatening to break it up(to prevent Monopolies, Like how Standard oil was broken up). Sports cars from Europe were getting popular, because of servicemen coming back from WWII, and wanted sports cars, but American Automakers didn't make sports cars, so they would either buy foreign, or go without. A man named McLean would still try to make a low priced sports car. But it didn't work. The idea of a car coming from GM that could compete with Jaguar, MG or Triumph was pretty much considered stupid and insane. C1:Generation: Bad but valuable. Just 300 Corvettes were made in 1953. Each of these first-year Corvettes was a white roadster with red interior. The Corvette was made of fiberglass for light weight, but the first cars were made with a really weak, (and kind of pathetic for a “sports car”) 150 horsepower 6-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The majority of U.S. based firms faced the reality that they would not be able to survive during such desperate economic times. The U.S. automobile industry, in particular, began to buckle under the depressed economy. The government stepped in proposing a multi-billion dollar bailout to stimulate the economy and restore economic balance. The possibility of this unprecedented government intervention was condemned by many economists. Starting in the 1920’s America began its shift towards a consumer culture as the economic growth of the nation began to depend more on the proliferation of consumer goods than of capital goods. Even at the outset of this trend, the automobile held a significant place in the new consumer economy. The automobile, which was once thought of as a rare luxury, was being sold by the millions. Assembly lines were becoming more efficient, thus allowing cars to be made more cheaply allowing the price of automobiles to drop. The growth of the automobile helped stimulate the economy through its dependence on other industries such as glass, rubber and steel, which were connected to the production of cars. These automobile related industries created new jobs, greater affluence and more spending power for millions of American consumers.
