Introduction Gangs exist because the members of a gang do not feel socially accepted by the world in which they live. A gang is a group of individuals who have decided to create their own levels of government, they have decided to educate themselves, and they are mostly intolerant of rules and laws of mainstream society. These individuals commit many crimes as a means to survival in the land. They have committed themselves to each other and are collectively called “a gang.” To join a gang you must first be initiated into the gang. There are different ways to be initiated. One way is for the initiate to be beaten by the group of individuals in the gang. Another way is to commit different types of crimes throughout the city. Others are being blessed in, meaning you have a family member already in the gang which gives the individual right to claim the gang. To be let into a gang, is no easy process. o Children who grow up with the presence of gang life in their household may have a dominating force in joining a gang. When growing up with that presence in your environment, you learn to imitate the talk, the dress and eventually you may even imitate their actions. Children tend to look up to their older siblings or parents; and seeing older siblings or parents as part of a gang will in some degree influence the child with that negative, violent denigrating behaviors of gangs. • Does a neighborhood infiltrated with gang activity interest children to join the gangs? o The Presence of gangs in neighborhoods play an ambiguous role in the lives of youth. Younger children are easier to influence. Younger children are more curious about what they see taking place in their neighborhoods.
