Correctional Institutes Do Not Correct or Rehabilitate Prisoners

Emile Durkheim puts forth the sociological theory that individuals are overwhelmingly a product of their environment. Thus, societies directly influence their members' perspectives and qualities of life. The same theory can apply to the American correctional system. Segregation in prison, whether according to race, gang affiliation, or religion, allows for the reinforcement of the group mentality within the individual through cultural transmission. Rather than rehabilitating, then, the correctional system only further socializes a criminal mentality among its inmates that directly contributes to the high rates of rearrests within a three-year period follow release. The reentry in to society is unjust for individuals (offenders) and society! First with let’s go back to the theories of punishment, these theories, which are, utilize by the justice system not only here, but based of the common laws they have been formed. This excerpt will be focusing on is rehabilitation and a little of retribution. The processes of these individuals are to pay back for the social harm that they have caused to society. Social Harm by definition is the recognition of what society has deemed and classified as social harm. In other words, what the people has felt violates the norms the living standards. Second, let us understand rehabilitation and retribution means and the effectiveness the correctional system is supposed to provide. Rehabilitation- society seeks preventative actions to hinder criminals from further committing other crimes, by forcing them to undergo training, psychological counseling, or some sort of moral or social education as to need for a law-abiding patterns of behavior. The idea of supervision states that one is watched over and supervised, this cannot be a suitable count for a youth nor and offenders. The youthful offenders have a chance for reassessment and a law-abiding socializing behavior pattern changed, under the right supervision. A positive motivational program with peers out of his/her comfort! Removal from community of neither temptations nor placing him/her in a community for long period that is very much similar or worse.
