Contemporary Inner-City Issues: Poverty Stricken Communities Destitution. Malnourishment. Impoverishment. All of these words weigh heavy when you bring up the topic of inner-city poverty and the dilapidated living conditions associated with it. Due to lack of funds and resources, healthcare is something that has become more of a nicety, as opposed to a necessity. Multiple large families become forced to live under one roof, sometimes restricted to the use of a single restroom. Psychological disorders become area specific, such as a more complicated version of PTSD, and jobs that only pay minimum wage are widespread. In a thesis paper presented by Paula Ijeoma Ilochi, she states, “An environment that is not conducive to healthy, nutritional …show more content…
In a peer-reviewed journal article by Marguerite Rosenthal, she talks about how if workers don’t possess the most up to date knowledge in their job field, then these employees end up getting left behind. In this specific article, she is referencing African American workers in the inner-city. Underpaid employees often try to organize strikes to raise the minimum wage. For many, it is difficult to get to work on time, or even at all, because transportation is being minimized to save money. Big wig companies don’t often want to hire people from these areas because they feel they aren’t as educated or don’t possess the skills to thrive. This is possibly because they are not receiving an equal education. Judith J. Carta wrote an article in 1991 that hits on the topics of inner-city childhood education and certain risk factors that these children face. Carta says: Young children growing up in inner-city environments face many risks. They are more likely than other children to have been prenatally exposed to drugs or AIDS, to be born preterm, and to have low birth weight. They are more likely than other children to have poor nutrition, be exposed to lead, and experience fatal or nonfatal injuries as a result of living in dangerous housing and neighborhoods. Finally, they are seven times more likely to face abuse and neglect than children from upper-income backgrounds. …show more content…
The White House talks about several pros to raising minimum wage. The website states, “Raising the minimum wage nationwide will increase earnings for millions of workers, and boost the bottom lines of businesses across the country” (“Raise”). This means that our country will be granted the opportunity to rise together towards better economic circumstances which will benefit everybody in the present and ensure that this country continues to thrive in the future. Another solution, which is already taking place in certain schools within Brevard County, is a backpack take home concept. What this is is the opportunity for malnourished students to receive a backpack filled with non-perishable food items that they take home at the end of the week. This allows children who would not typically have access to three meals a day over the weekend to get the proper amount of food that they need in order to thrive. When school resumes after the weekend, the backpack is returned by the student and refilled by either the school or a separate entity, which allows the cycle to start all over again the following weekend. The food can be donated by wealthier families, or the school itself could purchase it. This could significantly help reduce the amount of hungry children that exist within the school
Imagine a world where you are working overtime, seven days a week, yet your kids are starving. You can’t get the education you need because you don’t have the time and money to afford it, and you can’t change jobs because this is the only one you can get. Unfortunately, this is the reality for millions of Americans living today. The federal minimum wage is too low to help families, and actually mathematically speaking, too low to survive on. The quality of life for minimum wage families is terribly low, and that is unacceptable. As humans, we should be looking after others and helping the poverty come out of their continuous cycle. Raising the minimum wage would not only help families be able to afford a better quality of life, but help them to afford healthy food, get an adequate education, and invest in the necessary health care they need.
Developing children who need higher levels of nutrients than adults are more vulnerable to such manifestations. Studies show that lead toxicity can cause its effects on the CNS even at the blood lead concentration of 0.48 and 0.7pmol/litre [need REF]. In United States, there are over one million children having blood lead levels in this range (ATSDR, 1988; NRC, 1993). With enhanced exposure the manifestations of lead on CNS, among adult subpopulation are associated with alteration in the physiological conditions like lactation, pregnancy, bone resorption and
Poverty is referred to as the inability to provide for basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, medical, etc. Walls (2005) stated that at times they would go days without eating and would keep their hunger to themselves, but always thought of ways to get their hands on some food. She further stated that “At lunchtime, when other kids unwrapped their sandwiches or brought their hot meals, Brian and I would get out a book and read. I told people that I had forgotten my lunch but no one believed me, so I started hiding in the bathroom stall during lunch hour. When other girls came in and threw away their lunch bags in the garbage pail, I’d retrieve them and return to the stall and polish off my tasty finds ” The major thesis addressed by the author, detailed the struggles she faced.
From the reviewed literature, it can be seen that housing is affected by four major factors and these factors defines the type of housing and housing conditions of a settlement. High incomes bring about good housing whiles low income brings about poor housing. Low incomes and inadequate housing has a direct relationship with the emergence of slums in many countries. In this aspect, we are going to look at the types of slums, relationship between slums and housing taking into consideration the housing characteristics of slums using Nima as the reference point in Ghana.
Some examples of the circumstances that lead to homelessness and poverty are victims of domestic violence, veterans and people with mental illness or the chemically dependent. Homelessness affects adult males more than females, 51% of adult males are known to be homeless compared to 17% of adult women. There are more than 226,000 homeless children in California alone. California ranks #1 in the nation in child homelessness, nationally there are 1.6 million children homeless. Homelessness affects everyone, even students like us. It’s estimated that 58,158 student applicants indicated they were homeless on their financial aid application. Our society has demonized homeless people so much over the years. Bystanders or passersby’s do not t think they can ever end up on the street because they’re not crazy, they 're not drug dealers or addicted or they 're not alcoholics. Society does not realize that operating and maintaining homeless support sources such as, homeless shelters, day centers and homeless medical services are costly ventures for our cities to commit to improving which our government must apply more solutions to. Often the homeless are faced with many disadvantages which force them to turn to indecent acts to take care of natural human bodily functions. As a result, cities are forced to pay for the cleanup and maintenance in
Were born prematurely, especially those who were born at a gestational age of less than 32 weeks.
This is exposed by Patricia Smith in the article Time Magazine for raise Patricia Smith states that economic policy institute estimates that an increase of $2.85 in the minimum wage would boost wages for about 28 million workers and would mean an additional $6.000 of income a year for those working full time. (Smith 3) however , it can be clearly shown that minimum wage should not be increased. My three example is the food prices would be higher . Workers get paid less than they get now. Because of Family’s minimum wages are decreasing then what they

half of the victims struggling to survive in poverty area is causing them to not choose the right step to a better living but some people have such a negative view about the inner cities where disproportionate numbers of impoverished and African Americans live but the issue is that everything they accomplish is to help themselves survive. “Believed the high rate of young African American men in prison is due to their adaptation to poverty” (Burns). Most of the poverty areas are full of law enforcements which are arresting and killing people because stereotypically these are areas where crime is more likely to happen causing them to over use their power in poverty areas and the system allowing this to occur is a strong racial move discriminating society based on profiles.
The minimum wage increase claims to help family with low-income and reduce poverty in America, but in reality the point of the minimum wage are supposed to help 50 percent of younger people from age sixteen and twenty-four years old as they attend school, and about 64 percent of these younger workers were part-time workers, while living with their parents who makes above well above average pay. In other terms, the biggest number of minimum wage earners are teenagers who still live with their parents. Minimum wages are supposed to help young teenager to get by school until they can find a high paying job(Williams). This means that minimum wages are not supposed to help people raise a family and stay above the poverty
In the United States there is a problem. People are working minimum wage jobs and are not being able to pay for basic needs such as rent and food. According to the Low Income Housing Coalition, Today, in the United States a person earning the Federal minimum wage of seven twenty-five an hour would have to work around eighty-six hours per week to be able to afford a one-bedroom apartment at the Fair Market Rent, of eight hundred and six dollars (“Out of Reach”). People are working and need government assistance to help them pay for basic needs in life. Raising the national minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour would allow people to live a life where they don’t have to worry about not having enough money for food, rent, or other basic needs
Alcohol consumption and certain drugs during pregnancy significantly increase the risk that a baby will be born with abnormalities (e.g. fetal alcohol spectrum disorders).

Just like the novel, “The Women of Brewster Place”, how the women were separated from the rest of the society because of their socioeconomic status, people of the lower class also have to live in certain neighborhoods that are blocked off by a wall from the rest of society. Some of these neighborhoods are very dirty and not very well taken care of by the city or the government and that is done on purpose because they feel that lower class families or lower class individuals do not need to live in a safe, clean environment. Without money, to this world, there is no cleanliness. There is no safety. There is nobody who cares. Money controls everything. Being in an environment that is very nasty and not kept up can cause some sickness within families
In the 1990s, the federal government was concerned with increasing concentration of poverty in the inner city. Shroder and Orr report the government believed that gang activities and crack cocaine epidemic had resulted in a tenfold increase in the rate of homicide among African American teens since the late 1980s (2012). Especially, after the demolition of near 100,000 public housing units, the government urgently sought concentrations of poverty. This assumption that concentration of poverty is anchored in place have become popular, and MTO suited to illustrate the degree of harmfulness of concentrations of poverty. MTO moved randomly selected families living in high poverty neighborhood to low poverty neighborhoods as it aimed to provide
