The notion of concept generation and selection is an important step along the engineering process. Concept generation revolves around the idea of conducting research around a product area and the development of solutions to the problem set out (Smith, 2014). Meanwhile Concept selection is the process of evaluating the solutions developed against each other and if it meets the criteria for the initial problem attempting to be solved. The completion of the two tasks mentioned above can be done through a number of methods for each area which this report will look into for both areas with case studies and examples used in the real world.
Concept generation is “the notion of intensifying possible solution and can involve a number of ways of find this” (Smith, 2014). Within concept generation a number of ideas mentioned below are combined together to form a final solution. One such combination often occurs through research with can often involve identifying competitive products and existing solution to gain an understanding on what is done well and where a product lacks. This research can also include performing patent searches to both gain understanding of what current solutions are present. Another form of research which can occur is reverse engineering which is “any activity that is done to determine how a product works, to learn the ideas and technology that were used in developing this product” (CEM KANER, 1998). Reverse engineering is used in a numbers of fields within engineering particular in software engineering where it can be used to see if a competitor has used sections of your original code while the opposite action is often used to gain knowledge of code to allow file formats to work with a new product. There is also a l...

There are five categories of new products: new inventions, new category entries, additions to product lines, product improvements, and repositioning target products to new markets for new uses. The process is the same regardless of the category. It includes idea generation, idea screening, concept development and testing, analyzing the business, prototype development, test marketing, and commercialization.
Management is the act or skill of controlling and making decisions about a business, department or big organization. According to Kinicki Williams’ “The Exceptional Manager”, a good example of someone with the skills star qualities of a manager includes conceptual skills. According to the same source, Conceptual skill is the ability to visualize organization as a whole and it includes analytical, creative and initiative skills. It helps managers to fix goals for the whole organization and to plan for every situation. This skill is mostly required by the higher level management because they spend more time in planning and solving problems. According to Kinicki, the main goal of the use of conceptual tools is to improve the quality of decision or sense making process. Managers will have to rely more and more on their interpretation, analysis and questioning skills than on their prior knowledge and experience, as their environment becomes increasingly turbulent. The goal of conceptual management tool is not to present a definitive road map towards a pre given solution. It merely offers a systematic framework for orientation and progress. It provides steps, structures and formats that synchronize actions and allow groups and individuals to proceed in a coordinated manner. The goal of conceptual management is to improve the quality of the decision making or problem solving process. This should be achieved by improving communicative and cognitive process.

Theory creation is a powerful tool of the invention that involves conceptualization of ideas in a structured format with an aim of illustrating the conceived ideas in a sequential manner. This is possible with either the application of an
DEVELOPMENT. In developing the PCA, test author used 2 kinds of creativeness, one depending on J. P. Guilford's idea of divergent (versus.convergent) thinking along with the other depending on Teresa Amabile's inclusion of social and atmosphere factors in creativeness. Following Guilford, test author defines divergent production as 'the generation of options to satisfy specified broad requirements' (examiner's manual, p. 2). Both divergent-thinking subtests apply Guilford's concept by getting students to (a) complete eight pictures depending on incomplete figures, and (b) on two separate exercises of 20 geometric figures, identify just as much groups of three or higher figures as possible depending on some common feature. The eight completed sketches are each acquired for four from six divergent techniques recognized by Guilford (sensitivity to problems, originality, redef...
Creativity is defined as the generation of ideas that are both useful and original (Ritter & Ferguson, 2017). Creativity is tested through the measurements of two different types of thinking – divergent and convergent (Ritter & Ferguson, 2017). Divergent thinking is being able to generate new ideas and perspectives; it is measured through the Unusual Uses test in which subjects are given an object and must list all uses, even unusual ones, for an object (Ritter & Ferguson, 2017). The Unusual Uses test in a no noise condition is commonly used to create a baseline for assessing individual creative potential (Toplyn & Maguire, 1991). Convergent thinking is the ability to
As part of the college curriculum, we are taught to use the “creative thinking” process, a fundamental core teaching aspect that students are taught to use. This process is to develop the students understanding of the problem in front of them and come up with varied solutions to the problem, rather than the standard cookie-cutter solutions commonly given.
Often, creativity phase plays critical role in providing good opportunity to familiarize the client with the team work. Moreover, they share potential ideas and proposals to reduce cost; without affecting quality or functionality negatively. Accordingly, there will be a base of ranked and classified ideas and views.

The solution found by planners to varied situations in practice very dependent on the certain criteria like social, economic, environmental, and political. The evaluation of a solution on these criteria defines the success of a solution.
Design thinking process has eight generation stages: observation or analysis, framework, imperative or facts, solutions or alternatives, alternative evaluation and concept selection, implementation, construction, and post occupancy evaluation.
Following the next chapter describes the research methodology. This methodology divided into five stage process followed by main objective; theoretical study, model development, design prototype, develop prototype and model evaluate. Each stage will be briefly described in the next chapter.
Not only is this a key part of the film but also very important skills to have in the business environment as it is always changing which is why employees as well as employers have to be able to think on their feet in order to overcome unplanned obstacles that they may be faced with. Contingency plans using creativity and problem solving is essential for the business environment. An example of these skills in the movie would be when Billy and Nick lose their jobs and Billy then thinks creatively in order to get the two of them jobs at Google which solves their problem of being unemployed. Another example creative thinking and problem solving is after Nick and Billy’s group return from the club, which was on the same day as the group’s due date for the app challenge, is when Lyle wants to send a message to the girl from the club when he is drunk and this is where the group comes up with their app idea of having to answer questions when you are drunk in order to be able to send a message. This is also an idea of the SCAMPER method as substituted ideas for the app challenge since the previous night, they combined their knowledge of creating an app idea with the necessary resources, they adapted the idea to suit the needs of the app users, they modified it in order to improve it, they eliminated ideas that would not work for the app since

They also keep their minds open to new solutions, so that at any moment they can change to a different resolution that could be easier to complete. This extreme level of creativity allows them to solve problems and resolve issues much easier and much more efficiently (“Thinking Strategies”).
