Combined Effort Equals Success In the past decades, as technology became more and more important and frequently used in the commercial world, the shape of our daily business processes have drastically changed. Companies have expanded, opened offices in various locations around the world, outsourced their work to cheaper countries and created remote or tele-working jobs. The colleague you work with or your project manager might not be located in the cubicle next to you, but several thousand miles across the globe. This did not only change our business opportunities but also our work processes and how projects are managed. Almost all projects require cooperation between various departments or multiple persons. Employees traveling around in different countries still need to access information and must be reachable by their colleagues. A variety of technology solutions have been utilized for this purpose, such as remote connections to the intranet, storing data on external drives or e-mailing corporate data back and forth between employees in various locations.
Attaining results from a team consisting of members likely spread across vast distances is an increasingly difficult task without taking advantage of the necessary resources available for distance collaboration. Several factors are taken into consideration when building an effective team. Creating a team out of a group of people who come from a variety of backgrounds is not an easy task because group members must first learn how to collaborate as a team before they can even consider completing a project together. Teams have a clear purpose with defined roles for each of its participants. Collaboration with the use of technological resources comes into play when a team consists of members spread out geographically. Realizing the strengths of each team member as well as the resources that are available is essential to a team’s success.
The increasing number of knowledge intensive research and development companies have turned to virtual teams in the recent past in order for them to generate the greatest competitive advantage from limited resources and labor. The geographically distributed teams must communicate via technology, and this has grown in prevalence as compared to the traditional teams in which all members were collocated and communicate face to face. Thus many organizations turn to virtual teams to reduce operational costs, embracing faster problem solving and innovate.
This paper explores the factors involved in success in the teaching field regardless of the environment. The information is based on the interview of current teacher Jane Satrom and her experience with a variety of adversities as a long time educator such as attending professional learning community (PLC) and department planning period (DPP) meetings. Her responses to various questions are compared to written advice for success in the college textbook Peak Performance: Success in College and Beyond in order to verify which skills and strategies are necessary in order to succeed. In my first years of life, I was the diva. I was the star. I was the only one that my mother ever paid any attention to. I was the bomb.
