The most valuable information I’ve taken away from this course is for social workers to have a greater understanding of the NASW Code of Ethics to empower client. The best support system social workers can create for client is to continually build a rapport with the client and his or her families to get everyone involve. Which is why it is important for social workers to be empathetic and cultural competence to client’s cultural values and beliefs. To be culturally competent, social workers must: know about their client’s cultural background, know and be aware of their own personal values and bias, and use appropriate techniques and skills when providing effective counseling. Another thing I learn is to gain awareness of my biases and able to work on them so that I do not impose my own assumptions and thoughts to my clients. Growing up with traditional Hmong parents, I was taught to not ask questions because it could offend others. Since then, I’ve already kept things to myself, even when I was curious about others I would often hope that someone else would as the questions I wanted to ask. As a social worker in training, the most important tool for a social worker to posses is the importance of self-knowledge. I’ve come to learn that if I don’t advocate for the clients and their families, who will? It is my job to advocate and give them the resources they need and in order to do that, I have to get out of my comfort zone and ask them questions. I’ve also learned that as long as they understand that I’m asking questions only to further help the client and their families, I shouldn’t place too much stress on my fears of hurting their feelings because my purpose for asking is to help
