The important event in this life is love relationship and the conflict is intimacy vs. isolation. This is the stage where we are supposed to meet our soulmate and develop a family. Erikson believed that intimacy can lead to a comfortable relationship sense of commitment, safety, and care in a relationship (McLeod, 2008). This is the vision that Erikson thought would lead to a successful life. Erikson believes that the most important virtue that you get from this stage is love. Love can be found from finding a companion, a passion, and friends. This stage involves avoiding isolation that lead to loneliness and depression (McLeod, 2008). This stage can be called the highlight of life. During this stage the individual is still young and not classified as old. This stage leads to your life outcome. This is when identity concern reaches a climax (Sharkey, 1997). This is the stage when you determine your happiness with the choices you selected from early on in this stage and the previous. This stage begins around age sixty-five and goes to death. The conflict in this stage battles with ego integrity vs. despair with reflection on their life. Erikson stated that this stage is the most difficult to go through. A detachment from society, sense of usefulness, retire from jobs, no longer have a duty of being a parent, and most find that their input is no longer needed (Boeree, 2006). Ego integrity is coming to terms with life and realizing that your time in life is coming to an end. This is not supposed to be a depression term. The point of this term is to look back on your accept everything that happened and to be happy with your choices. Erikson points out that we will make mistakes throughout life and if you didn’t make these mistakes then you wouldn’t be who you are (Boeree 2006). The key to this stage is avoiding the feeling of despair. This can be done by staying active, staying close to your family, and getting into support groups with other individuals in the same age group. Success in this stage will lead to a virtue in wisdom. Wisdom enables a person to look back on their life with close and completeness (McLeod, 2008). In order for this stage to be accomplished all previous stages must be obtained.
