The invention of the cell phones have changed the lifestyle, and the way people communicate. Despite their effective way of communication, the use of a cell phones while driving results in negative effects to driving performance. Many statics show that driving while talking is a serious issue, because it is the cause of many accidents. The solution is to make cell phone use while driving illegal, and creating phone applications or preventions that will make it difficult to text while in a vehicle. Furthermore, operating a cell phone at the wheel is on the verge of being banned by law in every state, and some have already started this solution to the problem. According to Caird, Willness, & Steel, authors of the article A meta-analysis of the effects of cell phones on driver performance, looked at this conversational issue and debated them for the obvious reasons. They’ve debated that conversations with other passengers goes on during the driving process as the cell phone conversation would. Now, that we have the ability to speak through speakers, which makes it similar, considering the concept of no hands. This would be the same concept in the argument. A human’s mind will travel into the thinking process. In other words become auditory distracted. With passenger conversations, they turn their head to participate in this action. The distraction is there regardless. It is difficult to make that illegal, considering this is the same type of distraction. It is true that both are distractions, but the solution is to figure out how to justify this regarding cell phones. The concept can be simple because it can be regulated or made illegal. Officers with the aid of cameras to prove the individual who broke the law can be taken to court. It is simpler said than done, since many will not do it. Increasing police presence on area roads can deter individuals from using the phone while driving. Fines being enforced for those that talk on cell phones while driving. If drivers are pulled over by police and they are ticketed then they will likely be discouraged from talking and driving at the same time. Intervention and education about the hazards of talking and driving can be a deterrent as well. Letting drivers know the risk of injury or even death behind the wheel can discourage drivers from using cell phones. Harsher penalties for those who previously got fined and didn 't follow the law the second time. “The penalty for violating the cell phone ban the first time is a $20 fine, while subsequent convictions are punishable by a $50 fine or more”(Burger, Daniel, and Yu 171). Simply putting your phone on speaker is still a distraction mentally. If one is visibly holding it, they are subject to a citation. If they put these laws into place, then that eliminates the drivers being distracted on the road, and it decreases the number of accidents.
