The Ethical dilemma in this case is should Mr. Clyburn fail Bob Simmons. Bob claims his computer crashed the night before but we don’t know that this is definitely the case. Should Mr. Clyburn trust Bob and give an extension on the paper? On one hand, Mr. Clyburn included backing up information in his syllabus and that all students were held to the same standard, Bob should fail the assignment. But who will this benefit? The stakeholders relevant in this case are Bob Simmons, the other students, the school community including future students of Mr. Clyburn and Mr. Clyburn himself. Clyburn’s efforts and criticizes his procedure by his exclusion of due process. The disadvantages include technological difficulties students can face and how they “may try to use such difficulties to his/her advantage, complaining that the computer "crashed" while taking an assessment.”(Ethics and Distance Education) When observing academic dishonesty Mr. Clyburn should have utilized preventive strategies to academic dishonesty. A strategy the scholarly journal provides is developing stages of completion within the assignment. This “process-oriented assessment would be to require students to submit thesis statements, outlines, and rough drafts so that they can see the project grow”. (Ethics and Distance Education) Mr. Clyburn’s is committed to helping his students, and has vested time in helping Bob in particular. Along with the “Process-oriented assessments, “Strategies for Minimizing Academic Dishonesty in Online Assessment” suggests enforcing academic integrity with a policy that holds students accountable for academic dishonesty. Mr. Clyburn’s current syllabus does include the importance of backing up information to more than one device but does not include and type of consequence or punishment for neglecting to do
