While growing up and observing my teachers at school, I have learned that it isn’t always an easy job. Teachers do everything they can to teach their students’ academic, social and other formative skills. Plenty of my teachers have to deal with complications, most of them being minor, but it isn’t always an easy job helping children, teens and young adults. As a student myself, I know they can be stubborn, unwilling to learn, aggressive, and irresponsible. Sometimes, they simply don’t care. However, that is a teacher's purpose: to help and shape their students to become better learners, so that they have a clearer understanding regarding a variety of subject matters. Someday, I actually want to become an elementary art teacher, which is why I researched this career. I chose to gather more information of what skills it takes to be a teacher and what you need to do to successfully fulfill this career.
A typical day for an elementary teacher would go as follows: instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods, write lessons plans to meet students’ needs and interests, and constantly monitor student’s learning and behavior. In addition, , a teacher may have to attend staff or club meetings, be required to go to parent teacher conferences and might even chaperone field trips. For teaching methods, depending on the teacher and what subject they teach, they may be more comfortable giving lectures, having discussions or demonstrating lessons, or all three. As a teacher, clear objectives and an understanding of what students want to achieve is very important.

Overall, I would love to become an elementary teacher. In fact, I wouldn't mind being a middle school or high school teacher either as long as I get to help my future students become better people, and more importantly, teach them new things. I think I have a fun personality and all of the right qualifications to become a teacher. I plan to attend a four year university when I am done with high school and get my bachelor’s degree in art education (K-12). I desire to continue my education after graduating from State College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, pursuing a master’s degree in elementary education, possibly majoring in science or history. With a teaching profession, the sky is the limit at what can be achieved. The class room sizes in schools today are very cramped and over populated. Teachers have more students than they can teach, making it hard to give any kind of one on one attention. There is an increased need for educational professionals, all teaching fields are experiencing a need for more teachers, and each type of educator possesses different teaching skills, and are on different ends of the pay scale depending on their teaching specialty.

As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. Many people on this earth grow up saying they would like to make a difference in this world. However, half of those people do not feel like putting in the work in order to do so. As an elementary education major, making a difference is one of the main goals. There are many benefits of becoming a teacher, and students benefit as well. In order to have many students successfully graduate from one grade to the next a teacher should be willing to put in as much work that is needed. Elementary school is where children are set up for the rest of their education. It is important to understand how to go into this career field, becoming a teacher has its own benefits, and the children are able to benefit from teachers.
My interest in teaching started at a young age. I used to watch my teachers in awe as they were able to find new ways to get their students involved and excited to learn. Their enthusiasm to teach was so inspiring. I would often find myself using that same fervor as I grasped each concept. I, then, was able to relay it to my fellow classmates as a peer tutor. To this day, becoming a teacher is a passion that flows through me. However, my enthusiasm and passion are not the only reasons I would be a good teacher. I believe being a teacher is one of the most important jobs there is. We are molding the next generation of lawyers, doctors, and scientists. We are giving children the tools necessary to be successful in their studies, and then the work force. We are horticulturists intelligence, planting the seed that can only sprout when cultivated. It is also a field where you have to consistently grow with the market. We must consistently grow with our students and with the advancement of the world as well.
My chosen profession is pre-school teacher. I had no idea on what I wanted to do in my future, but I knew I wanted to help people. The reason behind me choosing this would be due to my cousin Brianna. She is actually a pre-school teacher and over the summer I help her with summer school class. She had me become her teacher assistant because she had to handle more than 30 children.
Having the ability to shape a student’s life is truly a gift; so many of my art teachers inspired me to follow my dreams. After hearing Taylor Mali’s poem, What Teachers Make, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher: I want to make a difference. Mali spoke with so much passion as he answered the age old question ‘what do teachers make.’ “I make parents see their children for who they are and who they can be,” this quote really moved me because I think in a lot of situations students’ talents are overlooked by their parents (Mali.) My art teachers always had their hand in the community creating sculptures for the local fire department or crocheting hats and baby booties. I feel good teaching shows students how to apply the knowledge they learned. I want to model what they learned so they can apply it to their everyday life. I attend to teach my students to be active members of society and be aware and respectful of others’ culture, and teach them how to apply the skills they learn in art in their everyday life.
