I’ve always been very interested in computers, from the way that they function, to how reliant we are on them in the modern day. So when it came to narrowing down a list of potential topics for my senior project, building a computer was one of the top choices I had. Eventually I did choose to that. This included buying all of the separate parts and assembling it together. After that, I knew that I would have to install an operating system on it, most likely Microsoft Windows, for it to be functional to the common person. Most people do not know how to navigate through a computer without a GUI, also known as a graphical user interface. I felt that it would be a great learning experience to build my own computer system, and did prove to be in the end. I knew that the first step I would have to do was figure out how assemble all of the parts, along with find out which parts work with each other. Although it seems like a complex process to do, I now know how to totally disassemble virtually all modern computers and could tell you what purpose each of the parts serve, and how combined they function together seamlessly. A future career I may pursue due to this project is a Network Administrator. This would include maintaining a businesses network along with all of the computers connected to it. I would have to provide support to the end users when they have problems with their computers, and help keep the individuals computers safe from viruses and other harmful things that computers are susceptible to. I believe that I would be perfectly suited for a job similar to this. Overall, choosing this project was very eventful. One other thing I noticed about myself while doing this, is how determined I get when I start something to finish. There were times when I spent over 3 hours at a time just reading about computer technology, and what parts work best with each other. I found information like that very intriguing and had to just keep reading on. It did help me with my project a lot being a determined worker, as the physical process didn’t take nearly as long as I had expected. Seeing the completed project in action was a very awesome feeling. I knew exactly what each component was doing at that exact time too.

So you’re thinking about building a gaming computer from scratch? Well I can explain a few things that will help you on your journey. Gaming desktops/rigs take a lot of energy, so don’t go crazy when you see next month’s electricity bill. Assuming you have a good amount of money, then I will be telling you how much the items are, and what sizes you should get. I will list these items off in order from what you should be looking up first. First you will need to buy a case, this is one of the cheapest items on your list. Most cases are the same, they just vary from size, airflow, noise, number of drive bays, front ports, cable management, and look. Depending on which one you get it could cost you in the range of $75-$125. Once you have the case, we can proceed to the important goodies. Second you will be in need a Processor (CPU), this is the brain of your rig. Since this will be a gaming computer, you will need a very expensive CPU. Third item will be a motherboard, this will connect all the other components of your computer together. The first piece of technology that was introduced to me was the amazing, ground-breaking GameBoy created by Nintendo. My parents believed that my obsession with video games in my juvenile years would be the cause of my downfall when I would become an adult with no job, no money, and still lived with my parents. I admit that I did have an addiction in the beginning, but over the years it moderated as I became more attracted to what was actually done to develop the devices and programs that once ensnared me. The computer has been one of man’s most influential inventions, paving the way for greater achievements with time. Today, computers have become an essential component in fulfilling everyday tasks in both our professional and personal lives. Computers are used to store vast amounts of information, and even replace humans in factories throughout the world. We must now ask ourselves, is this reliance on computers aiding the human mind in achieving its full potential or rather replacing it and hindering our progress? Society has now become dependant on computers. How does this machine affect our youth and learning process? We have invented a machine with a greater, and faster learning capacity as our own. A new generation has risen that have used computers for most of their lives so it is not surprising that they have become highly dependent on the computer. As of now, humans only use less than twenty percent of their brains, and with computers doing most of our work, this number is slowly decreasing.
When I finally learned how to read, I couldn't get enough of it, several hours were spent along my twin sister reading what the book offered and admiring its colorful pictures. Learning to read is a happy time to most children, for me the excitement was double, I, at last got to read my book, and get answers to some of my countless questions. The value of knowledge is priceless, my mother has always said to me, the more you know the more you value, which is true. Knowledge is power, knowing more gives you more access to what the world has to offer, and that is pretty much infinite.
Then came “computer lab” in elementary school. We had to go with our class once a week down to the computer lab for an hour or two to learn basic computer knowledge. I was always one step ahead of my fellow students, so in fourth grade my computer teacher asked me to be apart of the computer club. I know that sounds pretty nerdy, but this is how I stayed up to date on the newest computer advancements. After all, I didn’t own a computer and I couldn’t always go over to my neighbor’s house all the time. I can still remember the day that my teacher brought in and showed us compact discs. She acted like they were very expensive and had to be handled with extreme care. I was so scared the first time I held one because she had instilled in us the fear of scratching and messing them up permanently.
