Recreating biblical narratives is a popular enterprise that can commonly be found as movies and television shows in today’s society. One particular Bible story that well known for being reproduced into motion pictures is the story of Exodus, specifically the parting of the Red Sea. Located in both The Old Testament written by Michael D. Coogan and in the biblical commentary Exodus written by Carol Meyers, both authors state that Exodus is marketable in the film industry due to its exceedingly dramatic effects. One particular recreation of Exodus I enjoyed was The Prince of Egypt. In the Bible, God specifically hardens Pharaoh’s heart one final time so that He has the opportunity to display to all of Egypt how powerful He truly is. “By overcoming the Egyptian ruler, his officers, and his military forces, the greater power of the Israelite god Yahweh will once and for all be established” (Meyers, 114). The Lord spoke to Moses informing him of his plan so that Moses knew that the Egyptians would be pursuing them. Yet, in The Prince of Egypt, the last hardening of Pharaoh’s heart isn’t mentioned. Plus, in the movie, the Egyptian pursuit is seen as an unexpected great chase for the Israelite. This method is used in the movie to create a more suspenseful scene for the viewer. The director probably didn’t see the precise biblical version to be as entertaining. In the Bible, the crossing of the sea is the most climatic part of the entire book of Exodus. Whenever God allowed Moses to split the Red Sea, the message He was trying to promote throughout the entire book of Exodus had finally been revealed. “The narrative proclaims that the outcome will be Egyptian knowledge of the Israelite god (v. 18)” (Meyers, 114). Since The Prince of Egypt is a cartoon, the director was easily able to make the parting of the Red Sea the liveliest scene in the whole movie. This allowed the movie to display its spectacular effects, but it didn’t give God the same stage as the Bible did. The only spoken lines mentioning God’s almighty power was when God stated to Moses “With this staff you shall do my wonders”. Maybe this was the director trying to get his viewers to read in between the lines, and see God as the most powerful being. The book Exodus starts with two long-lost friends reuniting at Cyprus of 1946. These two friends are Mark Parker and Kitty Fremont. Kitty Fremont is a nurse, and Mark Parker is a foreign correspondent. Ari is creates a plan to breakout three hundred Jewish children from a concentration camp called Caraolos. He intends to put them on a ship called the Exodus in order to help the two hundred thousand desperate people in Europe. The stories of the refugees surviving the holocaust affect Kitty in a way. Kitty decides to be a part of Ari’s plan when she meets a girl named Karen that she instantly cares for very deeply. When Ari and the children escape, they board Exodus. The exodus was wired with explosives, so if the British attack the boat they will blow it up. The British and Exodus have a long standoff eventually ending in which the Exodus is allowed to sail to Palestine where Jews are welcomed. Of all of the texts read in humanities classes, the one that is likely most comparable to the book of Exodus is Virgil’s the Aeneid. In Virgil’s the Aeneid, Aeneas finds himself on a journey to save his people, much like Moses finds himself in the book of Exodus. This is perhaps the most important comparison to make, however, this is not the only similarity between the two historic works. Moses and Aeneas both receive divine intervention at many points in their respective stories. In both cases, this allows them to continue on with their fated journey. The film The Prince of Egypt is in the most part very accurate with the exception of some minor details. The movie was released in 1998 produced and animated by Dreamworks which was about the story of Moses. The first topic that will be discussed is that the the plot was overall the worst section done. Another accuracy of the film that will be reviewed is the settings element is the best and most accurate part of the film. Finally, the diversity in the characters will be reviewed and are mostly accurate in the whole. Therefore, there are many similarities and differences between the Bible and the movie, ‘ The Prince of Egypt’.
Following the creation story of the book of Genesis is the book of Exodus. In Genesis, God promised Abraham a “great nation from which all nations of the earth will be blessed (Gen 12:1-3)” and in Exodus God completes this promise through the creation of the holy nation, Israel. Exodus tells the story of the God who rescued his people out of Egypt because of the promise he had made to Abraham. God calls to Moses to complete his promise. God’s call to Moses is not only important because he liberates the Israelites but also because God reveals His name(s) along with His true Nature. God calls upon Moses and tells him that He’s back to help the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and that Moses is to lead them. God then gives him full instructions on what to tell the Pharaoh and, more importantly, the Israelites, who are promised, land “flowing with milk and honey”.
Moses, the man upon whom God built the nation of Israel, brought his people out of the land of Egypt. By God’s power, he divided the waters of the Red Sea. By God’s power, summoned manna in the wilderness. By God’s power, he led the Israelites despite their obstinate attitudes. He is a greatly respected patriarch of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam alike. But, imagine his legacy to be non-existent. Imagine that he died under the will of the God who sent him. Exodus 4:24-26 is brief story that nearly describes such a scenario. This exegetical study will partake in an attempt to better understand Exodus 4:24-26 through examining its historical and literary context and looking into the scholarly opinions about the topic. The proposal this paper will make is that God is in control of everything. Though He had just called Moses to rescue the nation of Israel, He shows Moses and family his complete sovereignty.

In this paper I will explore what appears to be the chief reasoning behind the creation of the Exodus myth – the explanation of the creation of a monotheistic religion and the similarities of the Exodus myth to the ancient myths, as well as how one should approach the reading of the myth.

Exodus is the second of the five “books of Moses” that tells the story of the Exodus of Israelites from Egypt through the Sinai Desert. When Moses was born, the Israelites were oppressed by the Egyptian Pharaoh and bound to a harsh life of labor taking part in building some of the great public works of Egypt such as the pyramids, fortresses, and installations to regulate the flow of the Nile River. For fear that the Israelite population would continue to increase, the Pharaoh insisted that every male Hebrew child would be killed at birth. Ironically, during this oppressive period, Moses, the “future deliverer of Israel”, was born. To protect his life, his mother sent him down the Nile in a specially woven ark. He was found by the Pharaoh’s daughter who took him in and, to add to the irony, she hired his mother to be his foster nurse. The baby boy grew up and was adopted into the Pharaoh’s household and named Moses. His name is derived from the Egyptian root “mose” meaning “son”, but in the Bible, it is said to hale from the Hebrew root meaning “drawn out of the water.”

A literal, Biblical reading depicts inexplicable supernatural events suggesting the influence of the God of the Hebrews. There are three main theories about the Exodus Event. The first is that the event occurred exactly as accounted in the Bible, miraculous events included. Secondly, that the Exodus did occur, just not as the Bible describes.
