The Beethoven Guitar Project Concert Report
On Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 12pm, UCI guitar students performed Beethoven 's music in different periods of arrangements for two guitars and guitar and mandolin at the Claire Trevor Amphitheater. The performance was titled the Beethoven Guitar Project which included a program of Rondo by Beethoven arranged for two guitars by Ivan Klinger, Beethoven Sonatine for Mandolin & Piano arranged for guitar, Fanasie from words of Beethoven arranged for two guitars by Ferdinando Carulli, variations for Beethoven Septet arranged for two guitars by Vinc. Schuster, and lastly variations from Beethoven Quartet arranged for two guitars by Vinc. Schuster. The outdoor atmosphere was casual and simple since the audience
I really liked how the tempo of each and every piece varied and was not just one constant rhythm. I appreciated how classical Beethoven music can still be brought to life in the 21st century with modulation of instrumentation. I felt that time seemed to speed up during the performance, since before I knew it, the concert was over, hence, perhaps one can say that one was engaged into critically listening to the music and not focusing on when it will be over. Talking about listening, one can critically listen to it by using at least three elements: reception/audience, time and place, and emotional response. Recall that the audience had a widely distributed age variance from undergraduate students to senior citizens. I also said that classical music composed by Beethoven was modernized to fit 21st century expectations and it was combined with an appropriate outdoor atmosphere (despite it being muddy). Lastly, the emotional response I felt was that it made me acknowledge that music originally composed for a particular instrument can be morphed to fit the tonality of a different instrument. I consider that very creative and intriguing. Overall, I recommend this concert to my peers where UCI performers play variations of Beethoven musical pieces using string instruments and do so in a lively manner. There was no point during the performance where I felt annoyed nor bored do to all five pieces having an engaging vibe that made time go much faster than

    Every performance was presented with charm. The flashing, changing colors seem to go along with the performances. The director was humorous. The performers outfits were on point too. I liked the color coding of the vocalists, Jeremy, Jordan, and Rowan. Also, Julie wore a pretty suede dress and had a great voice. It was nice to see her come out for the 2nd time to sing. When Spencer kept playing his saxophone in some of the performances, it was just amazing. Some of my favorite performances were Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, Ain’t too Proud to Beg, In a Sentimental Mood, and more. It really made me feel like I was in New Orleans all over again. I absolutely love Otis Redding and The Temptations music, so I wasn’t new to these songs they played. I was sitting in the back (R-125) where I felt comfortable to bob my head to the music. If I ever come back to see another concert, I will make sure to get a seat in the back again. I adore Jordan that did sung the Temptations song. I thought it was exciting to see his enthusiasm while on stage keeping us engaged, but everyone did great in their own way. The song by Duke Ellington made me feel melancholy, the piece was soft.     I have been to many different concerts throughout my life but this year I experienced two exceptionally unique ___ that I had never seen before. The first one was a spectacular chamber recital that took place at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performed by pianist Yefim Bronfman and violist-violinist Pinchas Zukerman. The program included Schubert's Violin Sonatina No. 2 in A Minor, Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 7 in C Minor, and Brahms’ Viola Sonata No. 1 in F Minor. The second was a performance by the notable quartet “Anonymous 4” presented by the Universality of Chicago at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. The program included a series of medieval French motets from the 13th Century French polyphony, taken from the Montpellier Codex. The two performances were extremely different in nature and but at the same time very similar in what they were trying to achieve.     ...xcited to have this experience. Part of the drama of the concert at first is felt when the musicians come in and sit down and begin tuning up their instruments. I would not be able to comment on the performance of the orchestra. During the performance, I seen the audience were moving with the music, but I felt like that everyone seems knows more music than what I learned throughout this semester. After I went home and did some of the research on these music I finally understand why these people like to attend the orchestra concerto, it was because that every piece of music has a history behind it. The Los Angeles audience seemed to me to be people who know music and who will listen to something new in a respectful way.     Each individual player in this orchestra is a soloist of sorts, playing a completely different piece than the musician seated directly next to them or across the stage. Rather than being written as a concerto, this piece, written in three movements, allows for each of the accomplished musicians to display their skill individually though each solo is not brought to the forefront of the piece, creating a what sounds like a disgruntled compilation of individual pieces that come together. This piece both begins ends with the Funeral March of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony directly tied into the basses, at first it is quiet and difficult to recognize but as the third movement is introduced it becomes more pronounced and evident. Those who were present for this pieces introduction to society were able to see its emotional effect on its composer who had obvious emotional ties to the music.     I enjoyed this concert. It was my first real experience with jazz music. To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect, but I left satisfied that I attended. However, there was one thing I did not enjoy. The narrator between songs was not very effective and actually took away somewhat from the concert. He failed numerous times at trying to be humorous and rambled on. My favorite piece was 88 Basie Street. It gave me that easy and relaxed feeling. This piece started softer, and then seemed to pick up with more energy. With my lack of knowledge of Jazz music, I certainly enjoyed this piece the best. I learned how exciting and fun listening to jazz being played live can actually be. I found it very interesting. Like I said earlier, the only thing I would change to make the concert more effective would be to have the narrator speak less.
