Reflection Essay For my refection essay, I chose the poem “A Dream” by, Edgar Allan Poe. He is a world famous poet, his poems are always very dark. I really liked this poem because at first it didn 't come across to me as a dark poem. I thought it was going to different from the rest. The more times I read it the more I understood it. The poem still has a very dark meaning to it. The poem, is a lyrical poem because he expresses his person feelings with rhyming words. The main theme of the poem is be careful what you wish for. Dreams seem wonderful but we have to consider the reality of them. It makes the poem more descriptive and lively. He uses imagery by using the terms night and day for example the first line of the first stanza reads, ”In visions of the dark night,” and the third line reads “But a waking dream of life and light” (22). When Poe brings up the different times of the day it sets the mood of the poem. Another literary device Poe uses is symbolism the last line of the poem Poe refers to the sun as “In Truths day-star”(22). He is referring to the sun as the truth because it wakes him up from his beautiful dream to face his sad reality. He compares Hath cheering him to a lovely beam using the word “as” in the third line of the the third stanza saying, “Hath cheered me as a lovely beam” (22). This simile represents people loving him as great person. On more literary device he uses is personification when he says, “I have dreamed of joy departed” (22). He is bringing “joy” to life by saying it has departed. Joy is a feeling only a human being can feel. It cannot come to life itself. Lastly he uses an onomatopoeia “Ah!” what is not a dream by day” (22). The word “Ah!” is a sound used to giving the poem more feelings and emotions. For instance, Poe ends each line, where the first two lines rhyme, the next two rhyme, and so on. Along with the use of rhyming, Poe also uses descriptive imagery. A main example of imagery in Poe's poem would be “From the lightning in the sky/ As it pass'd me flying by--/ From the thunder, and the storm--/ And the cloud that took the form” (Poe 17-20). A New Kind of Dreaming is a novel written by Anthony Eaton, about a teenage boy, Jamie Riley, being referred to rural Western Australia where, he meets new friends, enemies and also discovers a shocking secret about the towns head police officer. The pressure to find out the secret puts Jamie in a great deal of trouble, from being frightened by the police, blamed for a fire and vandalism offences and even going missing in the desert. The characters have authority or are defenceless.
Figurative Language in used throughout poems so the reader can develop a further understanding of the text. In “The Journey” the author uses rhythm and metaphors throughout the poem. “...as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of the clouds..”(25-27). The author compares the star burning to finding your voice. Rhythm also develops the theme of the poem because throughout the story rhythm is presented as happy showing growing up and changing for the better is necessary and cheerful. This theory is from Sigmund Freud, an interesting psychologist with a different aspect of the human psyche. Part of Freud 's theory I find most intriguing is the dream analysis portion. I believe that dreams are the link to the unconscious. Which makes it easier to understand where Freud is coming from with his logic in using this technique to analyze what a person is feeling. The psychoanalytic theory looks closely into the unconscious portion of a person 's mind, which I agree can reveal multiple troubles that would not be found if you didn 't look deep into the patients thoughts and memories. The theory had some downfalls as well as these great aspects.
Poe utilizes a gradual change in diction as the poem progresses. Initially, he begins the poem with melancholic diction when the narrator is falling asleep: “while I pondered, weak and weary,” “nodded, nearly napping,” and “of someone gently rapping” (1-4). The utilization of alliteration in these lines supply a song-like rhythm, which is soothing to the reader. This usage of diction conveys a mellow tone. Further into the poem, when the increasingly agitated narrator becomes vexed at the raven, he lashes out at the bird. Here, he states, “Get thee back into the tempest and the Night’s Plutonian shore! / Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken! / Leave my loneliness unbroken!--quit the bust above my door! / Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!” (98-101). Here, his uses archaic words and phrases such as “thee,” “Night’s Plutonian shore,” and “thy soul hath”. This usage of unorthodox language creates a theatrical, dramatic, and climactic effect, which leads to an impassioned tone. By presenting both tones, Poe is able to show the contrast between the two. This transformation from a tone that is mellow to one of frustration and anxiety represents the spiraling downward of the narrator’s mental state.

His death remains a mystery, there are different stories about how he died but no one really knows the truth behind his death. This poem “Alone” is a powerful lyrical poem that has portrayed Edgar Allan Poe’s tough and suffering childhood. The poet is the narrator of this poem. He talks about his strange and tough childhood throughout the poem with a dark tone along with wickedness, which makes it obvious that this poem’s theme is not about living a happy and wonderful life.

Edgar Allen Poe was one of the greatest writers of the nineteenth century. Perhaps he is best know for is ominous short stories. One of my personal favorites was called The Raven. Throughout his works Poe used coherent connections between symbols to encourage the reader to dig deep and find the real meaning of his writing. Poe's work is much like a puzzle, when u first see it its intact, but take apart and find there is much more to the story than you thought. The Raven, written in 1845, is a perfect example of Poe at his craziest. Poe's calculated use of symbolism is at his best in this story as each symbol coincides with the others. In The Raven, Poe explains a morbid fear of loneliness and the end of something through symbols. The symbols not only tell the story of the narrator in the poem, they also tell the true story of Poe's own loneliness in life and the hardships he faced. Connected together through imagery they tell a story of a dark world only Poe Knows exists.

In the end i will conclude that Poe’s inspiration for all of his works was both sadness and anger.
The poet mourns the death of his loved one and wants the world to grieve with him. His wants his subjective to be objective. The first stanza links everything to noise. He wants to 'silence the piano ' for example, showing how he wants no more noise in the world. Throughout the poem, there are many imperatives. This relates back to Remember, where the poems title is included in the imperatives. The third stanza has no imperatives at all, and many antonyms. This is the poets way of saying they meant everything to him. The second stanza uses 'scribbling ' to personify a plane. The use of personification in the poem links back to Do not go gentle into that good night. The first stanza contains references to things that can be easily done like 'stop all the clocks '. The second has things that are theoretically possible but a bit harder to do. The poem seems to get less and less realistic as it goes on. The final line, 'For nothing now can ever come to any good ', is quite bleak, showing how the death of his partner has affected the poet. It gives him no good feelings

The poem examines the emotions of a young man who has lost his lover to death and who tries unsuccessfully to distract himself from his sadness through books. Books, however, prove to be of little help, as his night becomes a nightmare and his solitude is shattered by a single visitor, the raven.
