Early adulthood (18 – 39 years) is a crucial stage in an individual’s development. In the adolescence stage, adolescents are preoccupied with their body image and are focused on peer relations as crucial to their sense of identity (Pugh & Hart, 1999). In early adulthood, physical development is optimum. Individuals are energetic and explore various perspectives in the domains of career and interpersonal life. Various stressors experienced during this stage may lead to fluctuations in emotional reactions of the individual, in turn affecting their interpersonal relationships. The importance of identity and intimacy in early adulthood has been highlighted by various theorists. Some proposed stage-wise developmental model while few others gave a continuous development model. Erikson (1963) was among the first theorists who emphasized on the relation between the two variables and its influence on the person’s psychosocial development. Erikson’s stages of Psychosocial Development. Erik Erikson (1963) proposed 8 sequential stages that individual needs to pass through for a healthy development. In each stage, the person is confronted with basic conflicts, the successful resolution of which would lead to the development of a virtue. If unresolved, they experience a crisis respective to that stage which may be resolved later in life. Crucial to the early adulthood stage is the stage of intimacy vs isolation. According to Erikson (1963), healthy identity formation in the adolescence period is a necessary precursor for intimacy in romantic relationship during early adulthood. If the individual experiences role confusion during adolescence, then, forming intimate relationships becomes difficult.
