In the world of cinema, a director can either be a tool to create a film without ever being seen or heard by the audience or they can put their “stamp” on the movie so that the audience immediately knows who directed the film. The latter of these types of directors is called an auteur. The director whose style and creativity is evident and repetitive in their films is what Francois Truffaut, the film critic who established the theory, would call an auteur (Boda &Pendleton-Thompson). Two such auteurs whose films were shown in class this semester include the legendary French director Jean-Luc Godard who directed Vivre Sa Vie (1962) and the American director of Upstream Color (2013), Shane Carruth. ...unexpected fall into darkness and all of the elements of style that he employs reinforce that theme. Shane Carruth does much of the same with his fantastical Upstream Color that employs cutting edge techniques and an artistic style that very well maybe a new direction that film could be heading in. Both men, as previously stated, have a style distinctive to their filmmaking process and in viewing their bodies of work, one would be able to see that style shine through. That is what makes them great auteurs. Maybe in the future, the cinema world will experience many more auteurs that will invoke their own personal flair on the film industry, which inherently will make films more diverse. As displayed by these two men, taking on the role of an auteur has the potential to make landmark films that will stand the test of time, rather than just being seasonal blockbusters.
