In Flannery O’Connor’s, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, there are many ways that the elements of fiction were used. Some examples of these elements of fiction would be theme, character, and point of view. Some of the characters and themes foreshadow the death of the characters. Also various details were actually used in the story.

The main element of fiction in this story would first be Point of View which is in third person. The grandmother’s viewpoint was the most important detail of the story that explains what eventually be the cause of her death. The theme of this story has many types. One type of theme would be Religion. Religion is a big part of theme in this story which also plays a major role in the grandmother’s death. Religion was used in this story because the confrontation of the grandmother and the misfit evolved around Jesus. The grandmother uses Jesus to try to persuade the misfit to spare her life. Doing this only makes The Misfit angry which forces him to kill her. The Misfit then says that “Jesus threw everything off balance” because he wanted to know how Jesus was able to raise the dead. He felt that people had better lives when they are dead than alive. The next type of theme that was used in this story would be Family. Family shows how the characters act towards each other. Family is a theme in this story because it shows how the family is normal. The family shows how it is a modern family because modern families do not always get along or agree with each other and this family portrays a good example of a modern family. The final type of theme that is used is Society. Society is what the grandmother looks at in life.
