Political framework is one of the four framework approaches identified by Bolman & Deal, and help change agents diagnose organizational needs, and plan appropriate actions. The political framework focuses on leaders who use a political approach to facilitate change focus on the political realities that affect companies both internally and externally. The political approach emphasizes dealing with the interest groups and their agendas, coalition-building, negotiating conflicts over resources and creating compromises (Bolman & Deal, 1991). Political leaders clarify what they want and what they can get. They assess the distribution of power and interests, build connections, use influence, and use negotiation and coercion if necessary. Directing leadership style is when the leader provides clear instructions for the follower to perform the work. Directing leadership style is used for followers who lack competence, but are committed to work. Coaching is for the followers who show proficiency in performing tasks, but lack commitment to the task (Burke, & Barron, 2014). The coaching leadership style is high supportive and high directive leadership. It is important to get employees involvement in the decision making as they are independent thinkers who are used to doing things their own way. Power in the political framework consists of authority, compared to the situational leadership style of directing. With management using either directing or their authority, they are going to demonstrate they are in the ones who are in control, and making decisions. They also use their authority to reiterate the vision of the company and keep the company on track with their goals. There are companies where I’ve experienced the coaching leadership style used as a form of management. This method works with building alliances and networks of political framework. Using coaching, leadership is needed to support and praise them to build the team. The supervisor is still very involved in the activities being performed. The decisions being made are by the supervisor or leader. In coaching the leader tries to connect the team’s goals while trying to develop individuals into a team, and in the political framework it is called building alliance and networks. The manager is trying to build a strong, effective alliance that keeps the organization on track with the organization goals. As teams and alliance are built inside an organization, the manager is able to give more access and control of agendas down to the employees.
