Love is something that can be expressed in multiple ways. Whether it be physical, mental or spiritual. These different forms of love appear in Kent Haruf’s novel, Benediction. Throughout the novel, multiple families face times where it could be easy for love to die but instead their love endures. Not only is it about true love towards a spouse, it is also love for a child, neighbour and community. The families of this book each have their own story and in each family their love endures, even during difficult times. There are three specific families in this novel that deal with love in very different ways. Dad Lewis and his family, the Johnson women and Reverend Lyle and his family. This novel shows the times where love is pure and joyous but it also shows the painful side of love. Pain of losing or hurting someone that you loved. On the other hand, love can bring such joy to a couple or even a family. It is something that cannot be seen, heard or touched. It is only felt. Although, they have experienced the love of others that have left them. “I’ve often wondered, is it better to have these years with someone you love and then have to remember and compare ever afterward and feel the lack of him…Or never to have had that other person so you don’t have to keep remembering what it used to be. Coontz doesn’t defame love, but touches on the many profound aspects that have created and bonded marriages through time. While love is still a large aspect Coontz wants us to see that a marriage needs more solid and less fickle aspects than just love. In Song of Solomon, through many different types of love, Ruth's incestuous love, Milkman and Hagar's romantic love, and Guitar's love for his race, Toni Morrison demonstrates not only the readiness with which love will turn into a devastating and destructive force, but also the immediacy with which it will do so. Morrison tackles the amorphous and resilient human emotion of love not to glorify the joyous feelings it can effect but to warn readers of love's volatile nature. Simultaneously, however, she gives the reader a clear sense of what love is not. Morrison explicitly states that true love is not destructive. In essence, she illustrates that if "love" is destructive, it is most likely, a mutation of love, something impure, because love is all that is pure and true.
The concept of love is a very ambiguous, controversial, idea that is nearly impossible to come to a singular consensus on. In this essay I will be describing and comparing two philosophical views on the concepts and ideas behind love. Through the works of Todd May and Plato, different approaches to the concept of love will be illustrated as well as determining the similarities and differences between the two perspectives.
Love has the power to do anything. Love can heal and love can hurt. Love is something that is indescribable and difficult to understand. Love is a feeling that cannot be accurately expressed by a word. In the poem “The Rain” by Robert Creeley, the experience of love is painted and explored through a metaphor. The speaker in the poem compares love to rain and he explains how he wants love to be like rain. Love is a beautiful concept and through the abstract comparison to rain a person is assisted in developing a concrete understanding of what love is. True beauty is illuminated by true love and vice versa. In other words, the beauty of love and all that it entails is something true.
The mother of the three daughters in the novel is Mah. Mah’s first marriage was to a man named Dulcie Fu. This marriage was a relationship that was founded solely on infatuation. Mah was young and thought she was in love. Soon after the first daughter Leila was born, her husband up and left to Australia and never returned. This happens all too often in today’s society. Young women in America become overly infatuated without even knowing what a relationship involves. The media portrays relationships at a young age as perfect and unending. However this is rarely the case. According to divorcestatistics.org, “50% of marriages end in divorce of couples married under the age of 25.” Love means something different to everyone. Each person seeks different points of interest in a relationship, and what you put into a relationship will rarely be equal to what you get back. Love can leave a scar on your heart but also healing to your soul.

It develops after you've gone through many ups and downs, when you've suffered together, cried together, laughed together.” This quote by Ricardo Montalban tells us that true love simply has to develop and it doesn’t happen right away. Janie is the main character from the book Their eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and she struggled on the concept of true love.This quote explains exactly why Janie never found true love. At least not until she met Tea Cake and went through a lot with him. Janie is a biracial woman from the early twentieth century in the novel and goes through many life changing experiences. One experience that has helped her grow was finding love. Janie was married three times in the span of the novel and only found love with one person, Tea Cake. Much of the reason is because her grandma, Nanny. Nanny taught her to look for someone who can provide for her rather than what her heart felt was right.This concept stuck
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 explains that, “love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT). Author Zora Hurston takes this definition of love and applies it to young Janie as she struggles to find her identity in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. As Janie experiences three juxtaposing marriages, she recognizes that love doesn’t exist to appease a third party, requires respect, and truly “endures through every circumstance,” which aids her development into an independent woman (1 Corinthians 13:7b).

Walt Whitman’s love is ever changing for anyone who tries to love him or understand his work. Love can be broken down into a multitude of emotions, and feelings towards someone or some object. In order to find love that is searched for, preparations must be made to allow the full experience of Whoever You Are Holding Me Now in Hand by Walt Whitman to be pious. Walt Whitman’s poem is devoted to the fullness of love, and a description of fantasy and reality. A journey to find love starts with knowledge that both participants are willing, and able to consummate their love in judgment under God. Time is the greatest accomplice to justify the energy and sacrifice needed to start developing the ingredients needed for love to grow. Each stanza is a new ingredient to add to the next stanza. Over time, this addition of each stanza will eventually lead to a conclusion. A conclusion that love is ever changing, and people must either change along with love or never know the miracle of love.

For hundreds and hundreds of years, we, as humans have yearned for companionship; sharing our life’s with one another in an intimate, and special way. For some, this is extremely difficult, the feeling of being loved and loving somebody doesn’t happen as easily, quickly, or frequently as they would like, struggling their entire life to find that person who they are meant to be with. These are the people who are desperate for even the slightest bit of affection, the people who will do and give up about anything to feel wanted in this world. For others, this comes rather naturally, adopting the characteristics and behaviors of their parents, people or the environment around them. These people, who are experts at the art of being vulnerable and loving others, are presented with their own problem of being susceptible to get taken advantage of and heartbroken by others. To love is to be vulnerable, although that may seem like an obvious statement; the trick is the perfect amount of vulnerability. Love is a great, outstanding creation, but if somebody is too vulnerable or not vulnerable enough, it can come to a screeching halt where people get hurt or worse. Throughout history other pieces of work by various authors portray love to be a questionable thing that is untrustworthy and that vulnerability is a concept with hidden evils.
Love has been expressed since the beginning of time; since Adam and Eve. Each culture expresses its love in its own special way. Though out history, though, it’s aspect has always been the same. Love has been a major characteristic of literature also. One of the most famous works in literary history is, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. This story deals with the love of a man and a woman who’s families have been sworn enemies. There love surpassed the hatred in which the families endured for generations. In the end they both ended up killing their selves, for one could not live without the other. This story is a perfect example of true love.
Love : Above all, Mildred Johnson is a figure of unconditional love. Love was the major fabric by which she created her tapestry of life. Love is the ubiquitous force that drives all people in life. If people did not want, give, or receive love, they would never experience life because it is the force that completes a person. People rely on this seemingly absent force although it is ever-present. Elizabeth Barrett Browning is an influential poet who describes the necessity of love in her poems from her book Sonnets from the Portuguese. She writes about love based on her relationship with her husband. Her life is dependent on him, and she expresses this same reliance of love in her poetry. She uses literary devices to strengthen her argument for the necessity of love. The necessity of love is a major theme in Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “Sonnet 14,” “Sonnet 43,” and “Sonnet 29.”
