For many readers, Balzac is not interested in values, rather he is all about power and energy, which runs with money and sex. Balzac seems like he is doing a live soap opera adventure at several familiar places. There is a difference between a live soap opera and the actual book because the characters are more exaggerated and seem to belong more in an epic than in a middle-class drama. The novel dramatizes a lot of the characters and makes it seem like everyone is smart including the janitors. Also, his style of writing where most authors use linear timeline, but he creates a virtual reality in different places.
The book’s main protagonist is Cousin Bette, who is a poor and plain girl and is sheltered by the Baron family, however, she makes her own living and is a jealous and vengeful woman. Baron Hulot is a former Napoleonic officer who is an official in the Ministry of War. Eventually, Bette meets a talented sculptor, Steinbock, who leads on and exploits Bette for what she can do for him. Instead, Steinbock falls in love with Hortense. Bette bullied him and made him get a job and get classes for art and made him into her creation. The relationship between the two is very strong because she used up all her savings on his development. The novel shows funny parts about how Hulot is chasing new woman almost every time as if it is the only thing worth living for. The book is entertaining for days and he shows you the difference between literature and fiction. Balzac 's approach on the book can be a cliffhanger, but he is able to put the reader in the scene and reveal the complexities of social interactions among the characters. Balzac can create scenes that draws the reader in and just gets hooked onto the book that they just have to continue to keep
