Higher education has seen many changes in the past decade or so, most notably from the birth of online universities that market to the stay at home moms, the full time employees, and those on a budget. While the ease of accessibility is the substantial driving force, the change in learning structure poses as a challenge to those that attempt to assimilate with online learning. This system requires students to be intrinsically motivated, self-directed, and proficient at active learning in order to succeed.

A self-directed individual is someone that is goal orientated, exhibits great organizational skills, and has a high level of self-discipline, therefore leading to the facilitation of the structured path towards the end goal. While these characteristics summarize someone that can succeed in an online learning setting, the core essential aspect is the genuine enjoyment in the process, and the strong desire to learn or change based on intrinsic motivating factors. I find myself scouring the web for answers to questions I’ve asked myself throughout the day at work, and find great satisfaction when I find the answers. I also have a high level of self-confidence which enables me to take the leap when offered a project at work that I would currently be ill-suited to complete at a high level, which in turn generates a growth opportunity.
