Higher education has seen many changes in the past decade or so, most notably from the birth of online universities that market to the stay at home moms, the full time employees, and those on a budget. While the ease of accessibility is the substantial driving force, the change in learning structure poses as a challenge to those that attempt to assimilate with online learning. This system requires students to be intrinsically motivated, self-directed, and proficient at active learning in order to succeed.
A self-directed individual is someone that is goal orientated, exhibits great organizational skills, and has a high level of self-discipline, therefore leading to the facilitation of the structured path towards the end goal. While these characteristics summarize someone that can succeed in an online learning setting, the core essential aspect is the genuine enjoyment in the process, and the strong desire to learn or change based on intrinsic motivating factors. As stated earlier, online learning can feel isolating. Therefore, possessing the inner motivation to endure despite the challenges is critical. I might possess all the skills and strategy in the world to become a successful online learner. However, if I don't possess an atom of motivation, nothing will be achieved. Thus, in concluding, I always reflect on my motivations for being in school. I also ponder about my life issues personally, professionally and scholastically. And embrace an approach of curiosity. I keep my eyes on the goal.

When I began my graduate course work at Northern Michigan University, I had not ever participated in an online course. Since NMU’s online course format utilizes NMU EduCat, I needed to learn the process and tasks associated with the website’s navigation and tools in order to be able to successfully complete course requirements and interact with other class participants. I was hesitant and anxious about my ability to learn the EduCat features, but the EduCat tutorial course offered step-by-step directions with information, activities, and assessments that enabled me to learn the necessary information. I was able to use my new knowledge immediately to fulfill the requirements of my courses. This direct application to my current reality as an online graduate student allowed for my new knowledge on the EduCat processes to easily become ingrained as part of my daily task
Online education, while offering clear advantages such as supporting a self-paced learning experience by allowing learning on an on-demand basis rather than a strict class schedule, also has significant drawbacks. Students in an online only course may struggle with structure and content without hands-on instruction, which can help motivate students who otherwise may be distracted or have difficulty working independently. The traditional structure of classroom education is effective, but also comes with a set of obstacles, particularly for nontraditional students. The best way to bridge this gap is hybrid education, which combines technology and personal interaction to support efficiency and self-paced learning while keeping students motivated, social, and connected to their professors and their peers through face to face interactions. While this newer learning model is still under investigation, there is evidence to prove that hybrid courses can lead to academic success.
There is good reason for the growth in online learning in college environments. Student populations have diversified since the introduction of the personal computer and internet (O’Malley and McCraw). Students with geographic, job, or other constraints are now able to benefit from a college education because advances in technology have enabled learning for those for whom higher education was previously not within the realm of possibility.
Being a self-directed learner motivated by your own needs and wants entails certain criteria. A key concept of self-directed learning is to put yourself to have no external motivation or at least very little.You must be the director of your life and education not allowing menial disturbances to interfere. You have to be very independent In your decisions and lifestyle. Being independent gives you a strong base for your personality, not allowing it to be easily diminished. Being strong and independent allows you to not be weakened by failure and to be more persistent in your work. If you fail at a task you 're more willing to continue if you have a strong independent lifestyle.
Today’s generation is like no other. The nation as a whole has completely evolved from past times, with technology being one of the greatest improvements. Traditionally, schooling takes place in a classroom setting, but, with the many modifications in our world’s system, we are able to assimilate more modern means of education, such as online learning. However, with many changes comes differences and requires adjustments. The online learning system has proven to be just as effective as traditional learning, with some minor differences, however, nothing of great significance. Self-regulated learning is defined by the author as “the efforts put forth by students to control and monitor their motivation, concentration, and affective aspect to protect their goals.” Studies show that teachers’ feedback plays a critical role in students’ controlling their learning and becoming self-regulated learning.
Over the years it has been seen that education has taken up several forms. With the advent of technology, education has also been integrated with technology. Previously it was seen that education was achieved through written forms of paper with pen or pencil. The use of pen and pencil can be dated back to the Roman Empire. However, with the developing pace the traditional means of attaining education are changing. The introduction of information technology has brought forth a new way of learning through the internet. E-learning is the new form of education introduced by IT which helps people to attain knowledge through the use of their computers. A portal is introduced by the use of information technology which the students are able to access and to take tests. However, this new technology also brings with it other ethical issues of plagiarism and social contact. Online education is an inadequate alternative for traditional, classroom-based teaching for several reasons: there is no interactive communication between the student and the instructor, potential employers do not value online course work, class offerings are limited, instructor feedback to the student might be delayed for days, and group projects are nonexistent.
Is technology helping or hurting people learn? Technology is increasing every day, and is soon going to be a big part of everyday life. The change of teaching students on online class is way different to what they are used to, and will take awhile to get used to. There are disadvantages, advantages, opportunities, and challenges in the technology in education. The role that teachers play now will change in the future when the major demand for the use of technology hits. There is a big change in the way that students are learning with this new online learning. Technology is changing the learning of students in a big way. Some ways are positive, and some are negative but either way there is a big impact on the way students learn. Sometimes it just depends on the student’s way of learning. Those kind of students should have the choice of what they would rather use a book, or a computer. Students need to be able to decide the type of learning that they want to do to help them learn. Students need to know which way it is that they learn the best. Each person has to find out which way they learn the best to better themselves. Find out the best way that they learn so that it can benefit them in life.
In the undergraduate educational setting, student proficiency and comfort with technology are stressed, but the essential mission of most undergraduate institutions (especially, liberal arts institutions such as Dartmouth) is on the development of the individual. The nurturing and supportive environment of most undergraduate institutions helps students mature and develop. The rave and fad of online undergraduate learning causes students to miss out on too many intangibles of an on-campus education. Our current theory on education hasn’t adequately dealt with the intricacies of a web-based education, and therefore the effectiveness of such is highly questionable.
