The Public Needs to Know 2 The Alabama Food Bank Association, through its network of food banks throughout the state of Alabama, provides the citizens of Alabama in need with the helpful resources necessary in the fight against hunger. Even though the United States of America is seen as one of the richest countries in the world, the United States Department of Agriculture reported that over 48.9 million citizens lived in households that struggled with hunger in 2012. Based on those numbers, one in six Americans struggled with hunger throughout 2012. How do those numbers in 2012 equate to where the state of Alabama stands in the fight against hunger? In the very same year, Feeding America reported that 19.2% of the state’s population was said to be suffering from the affects of hunger, which equates to 919,670 people.
