Joanne was born on July 31 1965 at Yale Central Hospital in England, Rowling always had a great love for literature and always saw herself as, shy and freckly with no sports ability. Rowling started wring children’s learning novels, but they never really got as popular as she wanted. Her pen name “J.K Rowling” was adopted from her nick-name “Jo” and her mother’s first initial “K”, The reason she chose such a odd name was that of the publisher of the first “Harry Potter” book in her series, He told her, use a relative’s initials or something of that matter for easier publishing purposes.

She was one of the people at Harry's hearing who said he was guilty. She is really rude to Harry. She proved to single women that she doesn’t need a man to survive. J.K. Rowling shows females that they are just as capable as men. An editor of Good Housekeeping said “Everyone felt J.K. Rowling was the one with the most influence across the widest audience. As a single parent who managed to cope and pull herself out of poverty and create a massive entertainment empire on the way, she is very inspiring” (Nicholson). Rowling shows women that they don’t have to have super-model looks, or a wonderful voice to be noticed by society; they don’t need that to be an inspiration to people of all ages. Those important words to keep in mind underscore one of J.K. Rowling’s characters sayings, “Wit beyond measure is a man's greatest treasure” (Rowling). The first Harry Potter book came out in 1997, and no one at the time could imagine that in the 10 years that followed, it would become the most read children’s book and a $6.4 billion worth film franchise. The aim of this essay is to try to explain the reason for the popularity of the Harry Potter books. The aim is also to show the changes that the series caused, how they influenced the people who read them, how they had an impact on literacy and overall, on British popular culture. In the first part of the essay I will briefly explain the beginning of the Harry Potter phenomenon and its growing popularity in the countries all over the world. In the second part I will deal with the character of Harry, explaining why he has such an appeal to the readers and how come people identify with him. In the third part, I will explain the impact Harry Potter books have on society, how they influence young adults and children. The fourth part will deal with the controversies about Harry Potter, the views and thoughts of religious people who see Harry Potter as a book that should be banned. In the fifth part, I will mention the difference the phenomenon caused when it comes to the book business and the film industry of Britain.
