Hello Administration! First of all I want to commend all staff for doing a magnificent job at ensuring that all students’ education needs are addressed and met. As a Sunshine family our mission is to “provide meaningful learning communities, staff development, and parent trainings to increase authentic engagement and student achievement. Together we learn, Together we thrive” (pg. 1). Our students work extremely hard daily to be successful in reading comprehension and writing. However, for the previous past three years, phonics has been an area of concern. Phonics is an essential skill that is needed in developing proficiency in reading comprehension and writing. As the current Reading Specialist at Sunshine Elementary, I believe that it is imperative that we look into this area of concern and utilized our Title 1 money to support reading intervention instruction. It is necessary that we collaborate and uncover methods to motivate phonics gains for all students despite their learning abilities. The literacy team and I have spent time researching supplemental resources and strategies for each grade level. We have come up with a proposal that includes excellent phonics strategies, a timeline of intervention strategies, consumable resources and materials in the area of phonics, a progress monitor and evaluation plan, and a list of textbooks that support phonics. 1. Teaching Systematic Synthetic Phonics in Primary Schools by Wendy Jollifee, David Waugh, and Angela Carass- The book focuses on numerous phonics strategies in teaching reading and writing. It supports phonic instructions in the course of several examples and mini lessons.
2. Phonics First-Grade K-1 by Jean Wolff- Phonics first provides excellent activities that support practice for primary students. In addition, the book has pictures, activities such as writing, coloring, cutting, pasting, matching, and tracing that motivates phonics instruction in students.
3. Understanding Phonics and the Teaching of Reading: Critical Perspectives by Kathy Goouch and Andrew Lambirth – Supplies educators with crucial perspectives on teaching phonics and reading.
4. Phonics for Dummies by Susan M. Greve- Is a great book that can be utilized inside and outside of the classroom. It displays methods in using phonics in an enjoyable and engaging and ways that will strengthen the students’ reading.
