From a sociological perspective there are reasons why poverty exists today and continues to do so. In Herbet Gans “The Uses of Proverty: The Poor Pay All” we can use his insight to explain poverty in America and how social theories can be used to understand modern social issues (Gans, 1971). By breaking down different functions and how the elite and the poor are interconnected within each function we can see how social theories relate to our society. Gan’s perspective on poverty is an attempt to explain through functional analysis that there are positive reasons why it continues to exist. By focusing solely on the those in a social structure with shared values Gan takes a different perspective by recognizing without the existence of those in poverty there would not be highly distinguished jobs for those in social justice professions. It would also upset the current roles that exists among the elite changing the dynamic of how our society works. By showing how the different functions affects each social class we can see why it may be useful to some parts of society to maintain poverty as much of a social issue that it is. Even though poverty is sad and unfair due to the fact that we are born into our social class with no choice, we can break down our social problems and see how one could benefit. Gan took thirteen different social problems that we can still recognize exist to this very day and used the functionalist perspective theory to break down how the two parts affect one another to create a perpetrating cycle with no means to an end.
